Sweat had flattened his gray hair against his forehead. His glasses sat crooked.

A pistol rested against June’s back.

“Hang up,” he said.

June lowered her phone.

The attorney ended his own call.

Harris kept his hands visible.

“You have two armed officers here, Leonard.”

“And I have the woman standing between three million dollars and a very inconvenient probate fight.”

June’s voice remained remarkably steady.

“Grandpa recorded you.”

“I heard.”

“He knew.”

“He suspected.”

“The recording is evidence,” I said.

Albright looked at me.

“Rachel, you were supposed to be wearing handcuffs.”

The sentence chilled me more than the gun.

This had never been random.

He had selected me.

He had built the false account around my identity because he understood our family well enough to predict that most of them would believe the accusation.

Albright ordered Harris and the second deputy to place their weapons on the floor.

Then he told Carol to pick them up.

Nobody needed an explanation after that.

Mark stared at his mother.

“Mom?”

Carol swallowed.

“Leonard, you said nobody would get hurt.”

“You were told what would happen if the plan failed.”

Dale quietly urged her to obey.

That was when I realized something else.

Dale was not surprised that Albright was hiding there.

June realized it, too.

She looked at Carol. “Was it really worth this?”

Carol’s face twisted.

She insisted it had never been about hatred.

June reminded her that she had stolen from her own father and framed me because he intended to leave June the estate.

“He was my father!” Carol shouted.

“And I was the one washing him when he couldn’t stand.”

Carol said she had given Walter thirty years.

June answered that birthday calls and occasional errands were not the same as being present.

“You were always there,” Carol snapped. “Every Wednesday with that ridiculous cooler. You made everybody else look selfish.”

“I never called you selfish.”

“You didn’t have to.”

“No,” June said. “Grandpa eventually saw us clearly.”

Carol bent toward Harris’s pistol.

Albright watched her.

For perhaps two seconds, his attention shifted from June.

I noticed three envelopes inside the open cabinet.

One for June.

One for police.

One labeled about the night Grandpa died.

Dale noticed it too.

“Mom, take the envelopes!”

Albright looked.

June moved.

She knocked his gun arm upward.

The first shot punched through the shed roof.

Harris lunged.

A second shot buried itself in Grandpa’s workbench after Carol struck Albright’s wrist.

The other deputy kicked away the weapon.

Within seconds, Albright was facedown in the dirt.

June stumbled toward me.

But Dale had the third envelope.

I saw him shove it beneath his jacket.

“Dale!”

He ran.

The deputy followed, but Dale slammed the shed door and barred it from outside.

An engine started.

June recognized it.

Her Tacoma.

By the time we crawled through Albright’s hidden drainage passage and emerged behind the grain bin, Dale was gone.

Harris radioed every unit.

Then he handcuffed Carol.

Mark watched without speaking.

Finally he asked how much of the scheme had been hers.

Carol cried.

“I wanted my share.”

“Grandpa gave you a hundred eighty-six thousand dollars.”

“That was over twelve years.”

June looked at her.

“My Wednesdays were over two.”

Carol lowered her head.

Under questioning, the story came out.

After Grandpa told Carol he intended to alter his trust, she contacted Albright about challenging it.

The lawyer said they needed evidence that June had manipulated Walter or stolen from him.

Instead of finding evidence, they manufactured it.

Albright chose me as the supposed thief because June trusted me.

Carol admitted taking my identification from my purse.

Dale failed to return my Social Security card.

Carol used a wig and my documents to open the account while Albright arranged for a temporary bank employee to process the paperwork.

They even obtained my fingerprints from a drinking glass at the Memorial Day picnic.

Albright transferred those prints onto the forged trust.

Dale created a company called Meadow Ridge Consulting.

Albright submitted false invoices.

Carol approved them using her financial authority.

Payments moved through the account in my name and appeared to continue into Dale’s company.

But Miriam Hayes was still listening through June’s phone.

She told Carol the money had never truly escaped Grandpa’s control.

The bank had detected the scheme early.

At Walter’s request, monitored transfers were allowed to continue so the conspirators would expose themselves.

The balances they thought they possessed were merely numbers behind frozen transactions.

Albright finally lost his composure.

He argued that the bank lacked authority.

Miriam answered that Walter’s instructions had been documented, witnessed and supported by physicians.

The genuine trust had never left the bank vault.

The forged version in Grandpa’s study was bait.

Walter expected someone to return after his death looking for it.

Grandpa had turned their greed into evidence.

Harris opened the envelope marked for police.

Inside were false invoices, photographs of Carol entering the bank disguised in a wig, a detailed timeline and a flash drive.

The drive contained folders for the bank, invoices, trust documents, Carol and Albright.

The final folder carried Dale’s name.

And two words.

FINAL NIGHT.

Carol stopped breathing normally.

Harris opened an audio file recorded at 11:41 p.m. the night before Grandpa died.

Walter was coughing.

Dale’s voice entered.

He complained that Grandpa should have signed what Carol wanted.

Walter told him he had already taken enough.

Dale accused Grandpa of giving June everything.

Grandpa replied that June had given him what money could never purchase.

Then came the sound of a drawer.

Glass.

Grandpa told Dale to put down some pills.

The recording ended.

Carol stared at the laptop.

“Dale told me he wasn’t there.”

The second file was security video.

At 11:43, Dale entered Grandpa’s kitchen.

He removed something from his coat.

Then he approached the medicine cabinet.

At 12:06, he left.

Grandpa was discovered unresponsive the following morning.

June began trembling.

We had all been told his heart simply stopped.

Harris said that might still describe what happened physically.

It no longer explained why.

Carol demanded that Albright tell her what Dale had given Walter.

The attorney refused.

Harris reopened the death investigation on the spot.

Then his radio crackled.

A deputy had found June’s abandoned Tacoma near the Solomon River bridge.

The driver’s door stood open.

The keys remained inside.

On the seat was the envelope Dale had stolen.

Inside were a letter and pharmacy receipt.

The receipt was for medication collected the night before Grandpa died.

Walter’s name appeared on the prescription.

Dale had signed when collecting it.

Grandpa had written on the reverse.

If Dale ran, police were to search the old river house before sunset.

He would return for the only witness he had failed to silence.

June asked what river house meant.

Carol’s face changed completely.

The Parkers owned an old fishing cabin downstream.

Harris asked about the witness.

Carol whispered the name.

Sophie.

Dale’s twelve-year-old daughter.

She had stayed with Grandpa the night he died.

We had been told she was now at summer camp.

Harris grabbed his weapon.

Before anyone moved, his radio came alive again.

A frightened child spoke.

“Please help me. My dad found me.”

Dale shouted somewhere behind her.

Sophie screamed.

The transmission died.

Click Here to continue read next: PART4: At the River Cabin, Grandpa’s Youngest Witness Finally Revealed What Happened the Night He Died—and Why June Saved His Killer

The cabinet moved.
