Mercer knew enough about the financial case to take his concern seriously, and when Dad told her Vanessa and Grant had removed possible evidence from the house, she began issuing orders before he finished the sentence.

Deputies reached the road just as Vanessa and Grant left in their silver SUV.

Their vehicle was stopped before the highway.

Over the sheriff’s radio came a list of what deputies found inside: jewelry from Dad’s house, financial records, nine thousand dollars in cash, the unsigned will, the red folder—and several prescription bottles.

Dad asked whose name was on them.

The answer was Eleanor Cole.

My mother.

His face drained.

“That medication disappeared after she died,” he said. “Vanessa told me the paramedics took it.”

Sheriff Mercer told us to return to town and not contact either Vanessa or Grant.

The drive took most of the day. Dad sat beside me with his hands folded over his knees, speaking only when absolutely necessary. Somewhere after noon, while trucks hissed past us on the wet highway, he finally told me something he had never shared.

The story I knew about Mom’s death was incomplete.

Vanessa had told me that Dad was helping Harold repair storm damage at a fishing cabin that night. Mom was supposedly alone when her heart failed. Vanessa claimed she arrived only minutes before the ambulance and found Mom already beyond saving.

Dad had not been at the cabin.

He had been at St. Matthew’s Hospital with Harold.

“Harold had chest pain,” Dad said. “He asked me to drive him. He didn’t want anyone knowing because he said it was embarrassing.”

“Why did Vanessa lie about where you were?”

Dad looked toward the passing trees.

“I don’t know.”

There was something else.

A paramedic had later told Dad that Mom’s condition suggested she might have remained conscious for at least half an hour after collapsing.

Vanessa had insisted she died almost immediately.

At the time, nobody investigated. Mom had a known heart condition. The doctor signed the death certificate. Dad was grieving too hard to question a version of events everyone around him repeated.

At the sheriff’s office, the red folder waited inside a clear evidence bag.

Beside it lay Mom’s prescription bottles, the forged power of attorney, jewelry taken from Dad’s safe, and the papers Vanessa and Grant had tried to remove.

Sheriff Mercer opened the folder carefully.

The first pages were from a private investigator named Michael Turner. Six days before Mom died, he had been documenting unusual activity around Dad’s accounts. There were photographs of Vanessa meeting someone outside the bank, copies of checks, cash withdrawals, credit-card charges belonging to Grant, and records showing more than sixty-one thousand dollars missing at that point.

At the bottom of one page was a note in Mom’s handwriting.

She had discovered the theft.

She intended to confront Vanessa and Grant that night.

Dad pressed his fingertips to his mouth.

“She knew.”

Mercer gave me a letter.

Mom had addressed it to me.

The words were simple enough to make them worse: if anything happened to her, I was not to trust Vanessa’s explanation. The folder was meant to reach me.

My eyes blurred before I finished.

“She knew she was in danger.”

Mercer reached deeper into the folder.

There was a flash drive.

A label identified it as a recording made on the night Mom died.

Nobody moved while the sheriff connected it to her computer.

At first we heard the low mechanical hum of the kitchen refrigerator.

Then Mom’s voice.

She sounded alive enough that Dad flinched.

She told Vanessa she knew about the money.

Vanessa accused her of searching through private things.

Mom called the transfers theft.

Grant entered the conversation and tried to lower the temperature, but Mom refused. She had contacted a lawyer. She was changing the estate arrangements. She ordered both of them out of the house.

Then something crashed.

Mom’s breathing changed.

“What did you give me?”

The room around us vanished.

The recording became the only thing in existence.

Vanessa said something about the medication bottles.

Grant told her to take them away.

Mom asked them to call an ambulance.

No one did.

She asked again.

Her voice became weaker.

Dad lowered his head, but the recording continued.

Grant wanted to know where she had placed the evidence.

Mom refused.

Vanessa began crying. She said they had not intended for this to happen.

Grant remained focused on the documents.

He kept asking where the original file was.

Finally, Mom answered.

“Natalie has it.”

My skin went cold.

Grant said I probably did not even know what I had.

Mom said I would.

For more than twenty minutes, she asked for medical help while they searched for evidence.

By the time someone finally called emergency services, her voice was gone.

Dad broke.

He bent forward with both hands covering his face, and a sound came out of him I had never heard before. Three years of grief changed shape in that room. He had not lost his wife to the failure of her heart. People she trusted had stood near her while she begged for help and decided something else mattered more.

Then one detail in the recording caught hold of me.

Mom had said I possessed the original.

A week before she died, she had mailed me an old blue music box.

I had owned it as a child. A tiny ballerina turned beneath the lid while a thin, slightly warped melody played. Mom had sent it without explanation, and because I was traveling for work, I had packed it away.

“It’s at my house,” I said.

My house was eleven hours away.

I reached for my phone to call a neighbor.

Before I could dial, a security alert appeared on the screen.

Motion detected at the back door.

I opened the camera feed.

A man wearing a dark coat entered my house with a key.

He did not wander.

He did not search the kitchen.

He walked directly toward my bedroom.

Dad leaned closer to the phone.

“That can’t be.”

The man turned his face toward the camera.

Harold Pike.

Dad’s best friend.

The man who had supposedly suffered chest pains on the night Mom died.

The man who had helped carry her casket.

Harold opened my bedroom closet, pulled down the storage box containing the blue music box, and placed it on the bed.

Then he made a phone call.

“I’m inside,” he said.

A voice answered too faintly for us to identify.

Harold nodded.

“Tell Grant not to panic. I’ll destroy the original before Natalie gets back.”

Dad stared at the screen.

The last trustworthy person from the night Mom died had just entered my home to erase whatever she had hidden for me.

Click Here to continue read next: PART4: Harold Tore Apart Mom’s Music Box for a Key, and the Bank Vault Revealed the Secret He Had Protected for Decades

Dad called Sheriff Mercer before I could tell him to.
