I think I can handle a spreadsheet.”

Daniel nodded.

“Fair point.”

We began with the trust statements.

Laura had created the account when Clare was a baby.

The structure included ordinary investments, but several transactions had been labeled strangely.

Not with company names.

With children’s books.

The Secret Garden.

Anne of Green Gables.

Charlotte’s Web.

A Wrinkle in Time.

I knew those titles.

Laura loved them.

More importantly, Clare knew them.

“My mom used to read these to me,” she said.

“You were very small.”

“I remember The Secret Garden.”

I smiled despite everything.

“You demanded the same chapter every night for three weeks.”

Clare looked down at the statements.

The listed amounts beside each title seemed random.

Daniel noticed that every number corresponded to a page count or chapter number.

At first we tried combinations.

Nothing worked.

Then Clare picked up her mother’s notebook.

“What if the books aren’t passwords?”

“What else?”

“Directions.”

She pointed to one transfer labeled The Secret Garden followed by 27-4.

Page twenty-seven.

Fourth word.

We did not have Laura’s physical books.

Clare suddenly stood.

“I do.”

She had inherited them after Laura died.

They were stored in Michael’s attic.

Police obtained them before dawn.

The pages were worn.

Laura’s handwriting appeared inside several covers.

We used the codes.

Page.

Word.

Page.

Word.

Slowly a sentence emerged.

FIND THE HOUSE WHERE CLARE FIRST SAW THE OCEAN.

Clare looked at me.

“I was a baby.”

I remembered.

Cape May.

Laura and Michael had rented a cottage there for one week when Clare was nine months old.

Henry and I joined them for two days.

The cottage was pale yellow with blue shutters.

Laura had taken Clare to the beach at sunrise and dipped her feet into the Atlantic.

There was a photograph.

Clare began searching her phone.

She found a scan from one of Laura’s albums.

On the back, Laura had written an address.

Daniel immediately searched property records.

The cottage still existed.

The current owner was not a family.

It belonged to a company.

Garden Coast Holdings.

Victor had already identified that name as one of Leonard’s shell corporations.

No one needed to explain why Laura chose it.

She had hidden evidence inside one of the scheme’s own properties.

By sunrise, New Jersey authorities were involved.

We could not travel until officers secured the site.

The waiting was almost unbearable.

At breakfast, Owen asked when they could go home.

No one knew which home he meant.

Michael’s house was a crime scene.

Ruth’s had a shattered window.

Mine had been sold.

The question exposed how thoroughly adults had destabilized the lives of children who had done nothing wrong.

“We’ll figure it out,” I said.

Caleb looked at me.

“Are you still our grandma?”

I pulled him onto my lap.

“Always.”

Even Clare turned away for a moment.

At ten, Deputy Collins received news.

Eric Voss had been arrested at a highway rest area.

He carried cash, two phones, and a photograph of Clare.

On one phone were messages from Leonard Price.

The instructions were careful.

No explicit violence.

Find the girl.

Recover the Laura files.

Do not involve Michael.

Leonard had stopped trusting Michael.

Possibly he never had.

When questioned, Voss claimed he was only supposed to frighten Clare into revealing where the evidence was.

No one believed the distinction mattered.

By afternoon, officers entered the Cape May cottage.

The current tenant was away.

The property manager gave access.

Inside, beneath floorboards in the smallest bedroom, they discovered a waterproof container.

It held old computer drives, copied ledgers, photographs, recorded conversations, and a handwritten statement from Laura.

We received scanned copies first.

I read her statement beside Clare.

Laura had realized early that no adult around Michael could be fully trusted.

Not Henry.

Not Victor.

Not me.

That hurt.

Then I understood.

She did trust me emotionally.

But she also knew I loved Michael.

She feared I would confront him too soon.

She feared love would make me careless.

She was right.

If Laura had handed me everything ten years ago, I might have demanded an explanation before contacting police.

I might have believed Michael’s first lie.

Or Henry’s.

She could not risk that.

So she built a path that would only become visible if someone examined Clare’s trust after something happened to her.

The financial codes pointed to books.

The books pointed to Cape May.

Cape May held the ledgers.

Laura had constructed a chain that grief, theft, and time could not easily erase.

Clare touched her mother’s signature at the bottom of the statement.

“She knew she might die.”

I hated the truth.

“Yes.”

Laura described Leonard’s network in extraordinary detail.

Mortgage fraud.

Identity theft.

False appraisals.

Forged medical declarations.

Properties purchased through vulnerable people’s names.

Insurance claims.

Estate manipulation.

The same machinery Michael later aimed at me.

She listed victims.

Dozens.

Then more.

People across three states.

Some already dead.

Some unaware they had debts attached to their names.

One entry stopped Daniel.

Eleanor Bennett.

My name appeared ten years before Hudson was sold.

Beside it Laura had written:

Henry refuses.

Michael pushing.

Leonard says eventually.

I read the line twice.

Henry had protected my house once.

That explained part of his guilt.

He had refused to let Leonard use me while Laura was alive.

Years later, after Laura’s death and Michael’s mounting debts, Henry weakened.

By the time he died, the plan had returned.

Michael completed it after inviting me to move in.

My son had spent years turning my love into collateral.

Clare’s voice broke the silence.

“There’s another page.”

Laura’s final entry concerned the morning of the crash.

She wrote that she planned to meet a state investigator named Denise Carter.

D.C.

The initials from Laura’s notebook.

Victor claimed he did not know who they belonged to.

He had lied again.

Denise Carter was not part of Leonard’s network.

She was investigating it.

Laura intended to meet Denise after speaking with me.

The appointment never happened.

Daniel searched public records.

Denise Carter left state service less than a month after Laura’s death.

No explanation appeared.

Then Clare found another note.

If Denise disappears, ask why Leonard has a photograph of her son.

The room went silent.

Leonard had not simply bribed people.

He threatened families.

That changed Victor’s silence.

Henry’s fear.

Possibly Denise’s departure.

By evening, investigators located Denise Carter in Arizona.

She had changed her surname.

When contacted, she agreed to speak only after learning Laura’s evidence had been recovered.

Her video call began after the twins were asleep.

Denise appeared older than I expected.

Her face tightened when she saw Laura’s photograph on the table.

“I told her not to meet anyone alone.”

Her voice carried ten years of regret.

Denise confirmed everything.

Laura had approached her months before the crash.

They met secretly.

Laura provided partial records.

Enough to launch an inquiry.

Then Denise’s teenage son was followed home from school.

Photographs arrived at her office.

One showed him asleep through his bedroom window.

Leonard’s message was simple.

Stop.

Denise did not stop immediately.

Then Laura died.

Two days later, Denise received another photograph.

Clare, age six, standing outside elementary school.

Beneath it was a note.

There are always more children.

Denise resigned.

She moved her family.

She hated herself for it.

Clare looked at the screen.

“My mom died and you left.”

I expected Denise to defend herself.

She did not.

“Yes.”

“Do you know who caused the crash?”

Denise looked directly at her.

“I know who ordered Laura to be stopped.”

“Leonard?”

“Yes.”

“Who did he tell?”

“Henry.”

I felt cold.

Denise had intercepted a call days before disappearing from the investigation.

Leonard told Henry that Laura could not reach the state investigator.

He did not explicitly order her killed.

He said, “Keep her off that road.”

Henry recruited Jessica because Jessica knew Laura’s movements.

Michael knew.

Victor knew enough to understand something was being arranged.

A network of people each did a small part.

That was how they lived with themselves.

No single person claimed responsibility for the whole.

Then Denise told us Leonard had another weakness.

He kept original ledgers.

Not because he was sentimental.

Because leverage only worked if he could prove everyone else was guilty.

She believed those originals were stored in a private office beneath one of his properties.

“Which property?”

Denise looked at Laura’s recovered statement.

“She knew.”

We searched.

Near the bottom, Laura had written one final code.

Not a book this time.

A date.

Clare’s birthday.

Followed by two words.

FIRST HOME.

I thought of the apartment where Michael and Laura lived after Clare was born.

A small brick building on Linden Avenue.

Leonard Price owned it now.

Deputy Collins called before we could say anything else.

Leonard had disappeared.

His house was empty.

His office had been cleared.

And traffic cameras showed his car traveling south.

Toward the coast.

Toward Linden Avenue.

He knew we had solved Laura’s final clue.

And this time, he intended to reach the evidence before we did.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: At
