If Jessica is with you, release her and surrender. Anything else worsens your situation.” Evelyn laughed softly. “Lawyers always think situations are made of paperwork.”

Derek interrupted. “Sarah, don’t listen to her. Just bring the trust documents.” His voice was strained, less controlled than usual. “Nobody wants anyone hurt.”

“You planted bloody evidence in my bedroom.”

“That wasn’t supposed to go this far.”

For the first time, I heard fear in him that was not theatrical.

Mia wrote on a pad: KEEP HIM TALKING.

I asked what he meant. Derek said Jessica had panicked and destroyed everything. She had stolen recordings, financial records and information that belonged to him. “She betrayed me,” he said.

The phrase almost made me laugh.

“You mean she did what you accused me of doing.”

“Sarah, this is not the time.”

“It became the time when you threatened to kill her.”

Evelyn’s voice cut in. “We did not threaten anything. I described consequences.”

Mia silently signaled that federal agents were tracing the call. The lake-house address had already been passed along, but law enforcement wanted confirmation they were actually there.

I asked Evelyn why my father’s trust mattered so much.

She replied immediately. “Because your father stole from us.”

That answer stunned me enough that my silence was genuine. Evelyn began explaining, anger gathering behind every word. Decades earlier my father, Michael Miller, and her late husband, Frank Collins, had invested together in several properties. Frank made reckless decisions. Michael protected himself legally. When the partnership collapsed, Michael kept assets Frank believed should have belonged to both families.

“My father never mentioned Frank.”

“Of course he didn’t.”

Evelyn said Frank died owing money. Derek grew up watching his mother lose their home and work two jobs while Michael’s investments multiplied. She called my trust stolen wealth.

I asked whether that justified destroying Rachel.

“She wasn’t part of this.”

“Everyone is part of something.”

That sentence told me more about Evelyn than years of polite family dinners ever had.

Derek came back on the line, impatient. “Bring the trust file Thomas Bell gave you.”

Thomas had not given me any original documents. Mia wrote: DON’T CORRECT HIM.

I asked where to bring them.

“The lake house.”

Mia shook her head violently, but I continued. “How do I know Jessica is alive?”

There was movement, then a muffled cry.

Jessica’s voice came through.

“Sarah, don’t—”

A sharp sound cut her off.

My whole body went cold.

Derek said, “She’s alive.”

I told him I would come.

Mia muted the phone and stared at me. “You are not going inside that house.”

“I know.”

We needed them to believe otherwise.

Federal agents planned the approach while I remained at Mia’s office. They asked me to continue texting Derek and behave as if I were collecting trust documents. Thomas created a harmless packet of public filings and outdated summaries that looked official enough from a distance. Nobody intended to let me hand them over.

But the plan changed when Derek sent a photograph.

Jessica sat in a chair near a stone fireplace, wrists bound. A newspaper lay across her lap showing that morning’s date.

Behind her, through a window, a section of dock was visible.

Agents confirmed the lake house.

Then Derek sent another message.

Come alone. If we see police, she goes into the water.

The phrase into the water carried weight because Amanda had died after her car left a mountain road and ended partially submerged.

Federal agents had no intention of trusting the threat. They established surveillance from neighboring property and the lake. The nearest houses were seasonal and mostly empty. Darkness settled over the shoreline while teams moved into position.

I insisted on going as far as the command location.

Mia objected.

I told her I would not enter the house, but Derek knew me too well. If he expected to see my car and nobody brought it, he might panic.

Agents reluctantly agreed to use my vehicle in the approach. An undercover officer drove. I sat in the rear seat several hundred yards from the property while another vehicle shielded us from direct view.

From there I could see the roofline through bare trees.

One downstairs window glowed yellow.

Derek texted.

I can see the road.

The officer beside me whispered that a camera had been found facing the entrance.

They disabled it without approaching the main house.

Then another problem emerged.

Evelyn had parked a second vehicle near the dock with its headlights pointed toward the lake. Agents believed she might be preparing an escape by boat.

Minutes passed.

My phone vibrated again.

Why aren’t you moving?

I typed that I was afraid.

Derek answered immediately.

You should be.

That was the moment something in me changed. For years he had depended on fear making me obedient. Every accusation, every financial decision, every isolation tactic worked because I spent my energy preventing his anger.

Now fear was still there.

But obedience was gone.

I typed:

I need to hear Jessica again.

No response.

Agents moved closer.

Through an audio device placed near the house, they picked up shouting.

Jessica was screaming at Evelyn.

“You told me Amanda was drunk!”

Evelyn shouted back that Amanda should have signed what she was given.

Derek demanded both women be quiet.

Then another voice appeared.

Lewis.

For one disorienting second everyone at the command post thought they had misheard. Lewis was supposed to have been arrested.

The federal agent beside me checked his radio.

Then he cursed.

Lewis had escaped custody during transport to a medical facility after claiming chest pain. A preliminary inquiry had already begun into how the escape happened.

Inside the house Lewis told Derek they had five minutes.

Derek demanded to know where he would go.

Lewis answered, “Anywhere that doesn’t extradite quickly.”

Evelyn said they were not leaving without the documents.

The argument grew louder.

Jessica shouted my name.

Then a gunshot cracked across the lake.

Every agent around me moved at once.

I dropped behind the vehicle as instructed.

More shouting came through the receiver.

Evelyn screamed.

Lewis yelled, “You idiot!”

A second shot.

Agents entered from the rear and lakeside simultaneously.

I could hear commands through radios: federal agents, drop the weapon, hands visible, move away from the door.

Then the line went chaotic.

A boat engine started.

Somebody was heading onto the lake.

I remained crouched beside the vehicle, hands over my ears, while Mia held my shoulder.

The operation lasted less than seven minutes.

It felt like an hour.

Finally a radio transmission came.

“Female hostage secure.”

Jessica was alive.

Another followed.

“One suspect in custody.”

Derek.

Then:

“Second suspect apprehended at dock.”

Evelyn.

Lewis had escaped by boat.

The first gunshot had come from Derek.

He had fired at Lewis after Lewis announced he was leaving without them.

The bullet hit the wall.

The second shot came from Lewis and struck Derek in the shoulder.

Agents captured Derek before he reached the back door. Evelyn surrendered near the dock after attempting to carry a metal lockbox into the boat.

Jessica was found tied to a chair with bruising around her face and wrists but no gunshot wounds.

Lewis took a speedboat across the lake.

He did not get far.

A federal marine unit intercepted him twenty minutes later after he grounded the boat near a rocky shoreline.

By dawn all three were in custody.

I did not see Derek that night.

I saw Jessica.

At the hospital she looked smaller than I remembered, wrapped in a gray blanket with an ice pack against her cheek. An agent stayed outside her room.

She cried when I entered.

“I’m sorry.”

I sat in the chair beside her.

There were too many things for which she owed apologies, and not all of them could be repaired by saying the words.

“I know,” I said.

She told me Derek had discovered her recordings because she accidentally left an encrypted-drive receipt in her purse. Evelyn confronted her first. Jessica escaped, scheduled the emails, hid the laptop and moved between motels. She intended to go directly to federal authorities once she was sure which officers she could trust.

Derek found her before she could.

Lewis used police databases to track a vehicle she borrowed from a friend.

They took her to the lake house.

Jessica said Evelyn spent hours demanding to know which files she had copied.

Derek barely spoke.

“What scared me,” she whispered, “was how normal he seemed.”

I understood exactly.

Before leaving, Jessica asked whether I could ever forgive her.

I answered truthfully.

“I don’t know.”

She nodded.

That seemed to hurt, but she accepted it.

At the lake house, investigators opened Evelyn’s metal lockbox.

Inside were original financial ledgers from Frank Collins’s failed business with my father.

Thomas Bell reviewed copies.

Evelyn’s story collapsed almost immediately.

My father had not stolen from Frank.

Frank had stolen from my father.

He had diverted partnership funds, forged signatures and used properties as collateral for personal debts. Michael discovered the fraud and quietly covered several losses to prevent employees from losing their jobs. Rather than prosecute Frank, he dissolved the partnership and took only the assets legally owed to him.

Michael even paid Evelyn’s mortgage for eighteen months after Frank died.

She knew.

The ledgers contained her signature acknowledging the payments.

“She built her whole life around a lie she could disprove by opening her own box,” I said.

Thomas looked tired. “Some people protect resentment because giving it up would force them to account for what they did with it.”

The lockbox held something else.

A handwritten letter from my father addressed to me.

He had written it shortly before his death.

Sarah,

If you ever learn about Frank Collins, understand this first: children do not inherit the debts of their parents, financial or moral. Derek is not responsible for what Frank did. Judge him by the man he chooses to become.

I stopped reading.

My father had known Derek’s family history.

He had chosen not to punish Derek for it.

Derek had spent years punishing me for a crime my father never committed.

The letter continued.

Your life should never become payment for somebody else’s grievance.

I pressed the paper against my chest and cried.

Later that afternoon, Mia brought another update.

The bullet recovered from Amanda’s vehicle years earlier—an object investigators had dismissed as unrelated road debris during the original crash review—had been preserved in evidence.

New forensic testing matched markings from a firearm recovered in Lewis’s house.

Amanda’s accident was being reopened as homicide.

And investigators had found a deleted message in Lewis’s cloud backup from the night she died.

Evelyn had sent it.

Make sure she cannot talk afterward.

The case that had begun with a pregnancy test was now something far larger.

Yet one question remained painfully personal.

Why had Derek gone through with marrying me if his entire relationship had been built around revenge and money?

Three days later, from a guarded hospital room, Derek asked to speak with me.

Mia advised against it.

I almost refused.

Then Derek sent one sentence through his attorney.

Tell Sarah I know why her father really created the trust.

Against Mia’s preference, I agreed to hear what he had to say.

Through reinforced glass, Derek sat with his injured arm in a sling.

He looked older.

Not remorseful.

Just stripped of control.

The first thing he said was not hello.

“Your father knew what I was before you did.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: In a Guarded Hospital Room, Derek Finally Explained Why He Married Me, and His Answer Destroyed the Last Lie I Still Believed

Mia took the phone from my hand and put it on speaker. “Evelyn,” she said, “this is Mia Carter.
