I could drink coffee outside until ten. I could have cereal at seven in the evening without disappointing anybody. No grocery lists appeared beside my keys. Nobody asked when I would be home. Nobody required me to explain why I had plans on a Monday morning.

Freedom had become embarrassingly ordinary.

The mornings remained difficult.

I still woke sometimes reaching toward William’s side of the bed.

Silence had frightened me after he died, and I had deliberately purchased a house full of it. But the silence here felt different from the condominium.

There, silence had seemed like proof that something had ended.

Here, it felt like room for something unfinished.

I started with the garden.

Rosemary went near the patio because William used to crush the leaves between his fingers whenever he walked past a plant. Tomatoes went beside the fence. Basil filled two pots. I planted far too much mint purely because William had spent thirty-eight years warning me that mint would take over anything it touched.

“You would hate this,” I said one morning while watering it.

In my mind, he answered immediately.

It’ll be everywhere by spring.

“Good.”

Talking to him no longer frightened me.

Sometimes it even made me smile.

A week later, Marcus stopped by with an envelope containing final property records.

Most of the pages were meaningless to me—recording numbers, legal descriptions, old dates.

Then one name caught my eye.

Tyler Morgan Landscaping.

I read it twice.

“Marcus?”

He leaned over my shoulder.

“Why is my son’s company on a record connected to this house?”

His expression changed.

“Your son?”

“Yes.”

The document involved an old lien. Years before I bought the property, the previous owners had hired Tyler’s company for landscaping. They disputed the final bill and complained about property damage. Tyler filed a lien. The owners challenged it.

Tyler lost.

The lien was released years ago, so my ownership was not threatened.

That should have ended the matter.

Instead, one thought lodged in my mind.

Tyler knew this house.

He had been here.

I called Rebecca.

She reviewed the documents that afternoon and confirmed that the old dispute posed no legal problem.

“Could Tyler have known I was buying this house?”

“Possibly.”

“Would there be any way to prove it?”

“Not from these documents.”

The coincidence unsettled me, but I had learned enough lately not to turn suspicion into certainty merely because certainty would make the story easier.

“So I do nothing?”

“For now.”

Something happened two days later.

Tyler’s truck pulled into my driveway just after noon.

I saw him through the kitchen window.

He knocked once.

Then twice.

“Mom?”

I kept washing the cup in my hands.

A third knock came softer.

“Please.”

I dried the cup and opened the door.

Tyler looked exhausted.
