If I searched for Evelyn from the old photograph, I could find those too. Grief is talented at manufacturing evidence.

“What happened?” I asked.

“I waited outside. Hello, your father died before our appointment about whether he fathered me forty-two years ago?”

The answer silenced Daniel.

Michael continued. “I left. Then I spent ten days telling myself the matter had died with him.”

“And today?”

“I saw your car here yesterday. The paper was a photocopy, the original typewriter ink faded into gray.

Evelyn Carter had been admitted late on December sixteenth after premature labor. Christopher was born shortly after midnight. His birth weight was low but not catastrophic. Contrary to what Thomas had been told, the baby did not die.

Daniel said, “We know that much.”

Michael looked at him. “Thomas didn’t.”

“Eventually he did.”

“Eventually is doing a lot of work there.”

Michael’s tone had steel in it. Whatever relationship he had imagined with Thomas, death had denied him the chance to test it against reality. His anger had nowhere appropriate to land.

He turned another page.

The medical record named Thomas as the presumed father. But beneath that, handwritten in the admitting notes, appeared another name.

Samuel Reed.

I stared at it.

Daniel said, “Our Samuel?”

Michael nodded.

The workshop seemed to shift around us.

“Why is his name there?”

“Because my mother told the nurse there were two possible fathers.”

I pictured Samuel standing under the workshop light the previous night, saying this was not his story to tell.

He had not been speaking metaphorically.

“Does Samuel know?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Michael looked toward the house. “Forty-two years.”

My anger sharpened instantly. “And he stood here yesterday pretending he was protecting Thomas’s confidence.”

“He probably believed he was.”

“Do not defend him.”

“I’m not.”

Michael removed another document.

A laboratory request form dated several weeks after his birth. Blood typing had been ordered for Evelyn, Thomas, Samuel, and the baby.

“But there was no DNA testing then,” Daniel said.

“No. Blood groups could exclude somebody but couldn’t establish paternity the way modern tests can.”

“What did it show?”

Michael slid the result toward us.

Thomas could not be excluded.

Neither could Samuel.

Daniel muttered something under his breath.

I sat.

The story I had formed overnight disintegrated. Thomas had not merely hidden a former fiancée and possible son. His closest neighbor at the property might have been the child’s father. And somehow the three of them had preserved this arrangement for decades.

“What happened between Evelyn and Samuel?” I asked.

Michael’s expression became guarded. “That depends on whom you believe.”

“I’m listening.”

“My mother said she and Thomas separated for several weeks in the spring of 1984. They were fighting about money, marriage, where to live. Samuel was Thomas’s closest friend. One night my mother went to him because she was upset.”

Daniel asked, “And?”

“They slept together once.”

I looked at the initials carved beside the porch door in my memory.

T + E.

Thomas and Evelyn had planned a future in that house while uncertainty about Michael’s father sat underneath it.

“Thomas knew?”

“Not before the birth.”

Michael told us Evelyn admitted the possibility after Christopher survived. Thomas reacted badly at first. He and Samuel fought. Samuel left Bellweather for several months. Evelyn’s mother used the chaos to take control, persuading her daughter that neither man could provide a stable home.

“And the name change?” Daniel asked.

Michael leaned against the bench. “That’s the part Thomas never understood.”

He explained that Thomas had signed temporary guardianship papers while Evelyn recovered. One draft proposed changing Christopher’s surname to Mercer if Thomas was later confirmed as the father. Somebody filed a version Thomas claimed he had never approved, giving the child the name Daniel Christopher Mercer.

“Why Daniel?” I asked.

Michael looked at my son.

“That was the name Thomas and my mother had chosen months before I was born.”

Daniel’s face went blank.

So Thomas had not named our son after Christopher exactly.

He had given our Daniel the name intended for his first possible son.

Daniel paced away from us. “That’s worse.”

Michael said nothing.

“No,” Daniel continued. “Actually, I don’t know what it is. He gave me somebody else’s name before I existed.”

“You existed,” I said automatically.

“You know what I mean.”

I did.

Every parent gives a child names carrying old hopes, relatives, memories. But Thomas had hidden the origin. That secrecy transformed sentiment into theft.

Michael continued because stopping would not improve anything.

In 1985, Evelyn moved away with her mother. The false amendment was corrected, and Michael eventually used Evelyn’s surname before later taking Hale from the stepfather who raised him. Thomas received occasional photographs and sent money. Samuel sent money too.

“Both of them?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Did either visit you?”

“Thomas twice when I was little. I don’t remember the first. I remember the second because he fixed my bicycle.”

The detail struck harder than a dramatic confession would have.

Thomas fixing a bicycle.

Of course he had.

“What did your mother tell you about him?”

“That he was an old friend.”

“And Samuel?”

“Also an old friend.”

I almost laughed.

Michael’s childhood had apparently been funded and watched from a distance by two men, each aware the other might be his father, while everybody pretended friendship explained their presence.

“When did you learn?” I asked.

“Seventeen.”

The final height mark in the workshop.

Michael confirmed he had visited the blue house that summer. Evelyn told him the truth there. Thomas and Samuel were present. They offered modern DNA testing.

“You refused.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Michael’s answer came immediately. “Because the man who raised me was my father.”

Daniel stopped pacing.

Michael continued. “Robert Hale taught me to drive. Sat beside my hospital bed when my appendix ruptured. Worked overtime so I could join a school trip. I was seventeen, angry, and suddenly two men I barely knew wanted a laboratory to tell me which one deserved a word Robert had already earned.”

I understood that.

Perhaps too well.

“So you never tested.”

“No.”

“Not even after Robert died?”

Michael’s expression changed.

“He died eleven years ago.”

The date matched the end of Thomas’s payments.

“I still didn’t want testing. By then my mother was sick. Thomas contacted me twice through an attorney. I refused.”

“What changed six weeks ago?”

Michael placed both palms on the workbench.

“My mother died in May.”

I closed my eyes briefly. “I’m sorry.”

“Thank you.”

After Evelyn’s death, Michael cleaned out her apartment. Inside a safe-deposit box he found hospital records, letters, and a sealed statement she had written years earlier.

“The statement is why I contacted Thomas.”

“What did she say?”

Michael looked toward the folder but did not immediately touch it.

“She admitted that the uncertainty over my father was not the whole secret.”

Daniel moved closer.

“What else was there?”

“She said Thomas spent forty-two years believing the most important question was whether I was his son.”

“And it wasn’t?”

“No.”

Michael removed a sealed envelope.

Across the front Evelyn had written:

For Michael. Give Thomas a chance to answer before judging him.

The seal had already been broken.

Michael handed me the pages inside.

Evelyn’s handwriting slanted sharply, unlike Thomas’s careful print. She wrote that after Michael’s birth her mother had done more than interfere. She had falsified documents, lied about the baby’s death, intercepted Thomas’s letters, and pushed Evelyn toward leaving Bellweather.

But Thomas eventually discovered Michael had survived.

That part we knew.

The next lines were different.

Thomas learned the truth because Samuel told him.

Samuel had found Evelyn.

Samuel had also known where she was during the months Thomas searched for her.

I looked at Michael.

“He helped hide you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“My mother claimed he believed I was his.”

Daniel said, “So Samuel betrayed Dad.”

Michael’s mouth tightened. “That would be the simple version.”

There was more.

Years later, Samuel confessed that he had not hidden Evelyn solely because he wanted her or believed Michael was his.
