Not the discreet double knock used by household staff. These were small, uneven taps, separated by nervous pauses, as though whoever stood outside was afraid that being heard might be worse than being ignored.

I was awake before the third knock ended. Years of living behind gates, cameras, guards, and a family name that attracted equal measures of respect and resentment had made light sleep a habit. I reached beneath the nightstand, wrapped my hand around the pistol kept there, and crossed the dark room without switching on a lamp.

“Who is it?”

Silence answered me.

Then came a whisper so faint I nearly missed it.

“Mr. Adrian?”

A child's voice.

I opened the door.

A little girl stood barefoot on the marble floor of the corridor. She wore pale pajamas patterned with yellow stars, one trouser leg twisted around her ankle. Her dark hair had escaped whatever braid or ponytail someone had put it in before bed. In both arms she clutched a battered stuffed rabbit whose fabric had been rubbed almost white around its ears.

I knew her face, though I had never spoken to her for more than a few seconds. Lily Bennett. Three years old. Her mother, Claire, worked among the housekeeping staff and lived with Lily in one of the apartments in the eastern service wing.

Children did not wander into my private residence after midnight. Adults rarely did.

I lowered the pistol behind my leg.

“Lily, what are you doing here?”

Her chin trembled. She looked over one shoulder toward the unlit corridor, then back at me.

“The bad man found us.”

Every trace of sleep left me.

I crouched until we were almost eye level. “What bad man?”

She squeezed the rabbit tighter.

“The one Mommy hides from.”

There were moments when instinct spoke before evidence. Mine was already telling me something was wrong. The Moretti estate occupied several guarded acres outside central Chicago. Vehicles passed through two gates. Employees carried electronic identification. Exterior walls were monitored by cameras, motion sensors, and patrols. Nobody simply wandered inside.

Yet Lily was shaking.

“Where's your mother?”

“In bed.”

“Sleeping?”

Lily shook her head.

“She won't wake up.”

I stood and took my phone from the nightstand.

Daniel answered before the second ring. “Yes?”

“Come to my room. Now. Bring two men and call Michael.”

His voice changed instantly. “Medical?”

“Possibly. Seal the estate.”

There was half a second of silence.

“Reason?”

I looked down at Lily.

“Possible intruder.”

Daniel did not ask another question.

I pulled on trousers and a shirt, keeping Lily where I could see her. She refused shoes when I offered them. Apparently shoes were less important than Bunny, the rabbit, and attempting to separate the two earned me the kind of glare usually reserved for hostile takeovers.

“Can you show me where Mommy is?”

She nodded.

“Did you see the bad man?”

Another nod.

“What did he look like?”

Lily's eyebrows drew together with the enormous concentration of a child trying to translate fear into useful facts.

“Big.”

That eliminated approximately half the adult men on the property.

“Hair?”

“Man hair.”

I almost smiled, but her next words stopped me.

“He knows Mommy.”

“How do you know?”

“He said her name.”

Daniel arrived at the far end of the corridor with two security officers. He wore black trousers and a dark sweater, already carrying a radio and sidearm. Nobody looking at him would have guessed he had probably been asleep ninety seconds earlier.

His eyes went first to me, then to Lily.

“Gates are closing.”

“Good. Nobody leaves.”

“Who are we looking for?”

“We don't know yet.”

Lily slipped her small hand into mine.

That surprised me enough that I looked down.

“Mommy,” she whispered.

We moved.

The estate had always seemed quiet at night. With Lily beside me, it suddenly seemed full of hiding places. Every doorway looked deeper. Every reflection in the tall windows suggested movement. Daniel's men spread ahead and behind us while orders murmured through their radios.

The eastern staff wing had once been guest quarters when my grandfather owned the house. I had renovated it into apartments for senior household employees. Claire's rooms were at the far end of the second floor.

Her door stood partly open.

Daniel moved in front of me.

I disliked that reflex even though I paid him for it.

One guard entered first. Another checked the adjoining stairwell. Daniel waited three seconds, received an all-clear through his earpiece, then let us approach.

“Mommy?”

Lily pulled away from me.

I caught her before she could run inside.

“Wait.”

The apartment smelled faintly of lavender detergent and cold tea. A lamp remained on beside the sofa. A children's coloring book lay open on the floor, three crayons beside it. Nothing appeared overturned. There were no signs of a struggle.

Claire lay across the bed in the next room.

Fully dressed.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The second was how pale she looked.

“Claire.”

No response.

I touched two fingers to her neck. There was a pulse, steady enough to relieve the first surge of alarm, but she did not react when I called her name again.

Lily wriggled free.

“Mommy!”

She climbed onto the mattress and touched Claire's cheek.

Daniel caught my eye.

I knew what he was thinking. Claire wasn't sleeping normally.

Michael Russo, the physician who had looked after my family for more years than I cared to count, arrived carrying a medical case and wearing an overcoat over blue pajamas. He did not bother complaining about the hour.

“Give me room.”

I lifted Lily from the bed despite her protests.

“Mommy needs the doctor.”

“Is she sick?”

“We're finding out.”

Michael checked Claire's pupils, pulse, blood pressure, breathing, and several other things while Daniel searched the apartment with his men.

I watched Michael's expression.

“What?”

“Let me work.”

“That's what people say when they don't want to answer me.”

“And this is what doctors say when impatient billionaires think money accelerates physiology.”

Lily looked between us.

“Are you fighting?”

Michael's expression softened. “No, sweetheart.”

“He doesn't like me,” I said.

“I like you perfectly well when you're unconscious.”

Under other circumstances, I might have appreciated the remark.

Tonight I watched Claire instead.

She stirred when Michael pressed against her shoulder but failed to wake fully. Her hand moved across the blanket as if searching for something.

“Lily,” she murmured.

The little girl twisted in my arms.

“I'm here!”

Claire's eyelids fluttered and closed again.

Michael glanced at me.

“What?”

“I want blood work.”

“At the hospital?”

“Eventually, perhaps. For now I've got enough equipment in my car to identify the obvious possibilities.”

“You think she took something?”

“I think we should determine whether something is in her system before we decide how it got there.”

Daniel appeared at the bedroom door.

“No forced entry.”

“What about windows?”

“Locked from inside.”

“Staff entrance?”

“Being checked.”

I set Lily down.

She immediately returned to her mother's side and placed Bunny beside Claire's hand.

“Protect Mommy,” she instructed the rabbit.

I walked into the kitchenette.

A cup rested near the sink. Tea remained inside, perhaps a third of it, with a faint skin forming across the cold surface.

“Daniel.”

He came beside me.

“Bag that.”

His gaze moved from the cup to Claire.

“You think she was drugged?”

“I think Michael thinks something.”

Daniel looked toward the bedroom.

“Lily said there was a man?”

“Yes.”

“Name?”

“Not yet.”

I returned to the child.

“Lily, I need you to help me.”

She stroked one of Bunny's ears.

“The man you saw—did Mommy call him anything?”

“No.”

“Did he say his name?”

She thought.

“He said Mommy shouldn't run.”

My jaw tightened.

“What else?”

“He said he always finds people.”

Behind me, Daniel became very still.

“Lily, did your mother ever tell you his name?”

Her fingers stopped moving.

Children possess a strange instinct for detecting the questions adults most desperately want answered. Lily looked at Daniel, Michael, her unconscious mother, and finally me.

Then she whispered, “Victor.”

Daniel and I exchanged a look.

There were thousands of Victors in Chicago.

Only one immediately came to my mind.

“Victor Kane?”

Lily's eyes widened.

She nodded.

That changed everything.

Victor Kane was wealthy, connected, and careful. He operated several legitimate businesses and had been suspected of considerably less legitimate activities for years. My family had crossed paths with him in business more than once. My father had disliked him intensely.

I had never known Claire had any connection to him.

“Daniel.”

“Already doing it.”

He stepped into the corridor and began issuing orders.

I remained beside Claire's bed, watching Lily curl herself against her mother's arm.

Until that night, Claire Bennett had been almost invisible to me. Efficient. Quiet. Dependable. She had worked on the estate for eight months, passed background screening, and never caused a problem.

Now her three-year-old daughter had crossed half my house in darkness because she believed a dangerous man had found them.

And somehow she had known exactly which door to knock on.

Michael finished drawing blood and took me aside.

“There is something in her system.”

“What?”

“A sedative, most likely.
