Victor grabbed her arm. Antonio, seventy-one years old and walking with a cane, stepped between them anyway.

I could picture it without effort.

My father had been capable of infuriating almost everyone he loved, but cowardice had never been among his defects.

Afterward, he helped Claire obtain legal advice and safer housing.

I had known none of it.

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“He thought you already had enough problems.”

That hurt because it sounded exactly like him.

Near the end of his life, Antonio had visited Claire carrying an envelope. Inside were a letter and a brass key. He told her that if anything happened to him before he could resolve a particular matter, she was to give both to me.

Three days after his funeral, someone broke into Claire's apartment.

Nothing valuable disappeared.

Whoever entered searched Lily's room.

They wanted the envelope.

“Did they get it?”

“No.”

“Where did you put it?”

Claire's eyes shifted toward Bunny.

The worn rabbit lay beside Lily.

I understood.

“You hid it inside her toy.”

Claire nodded.

When I reached for Bunny, she stopped me.

“Lily doesn't know.”

The rabbit was more than a toy to the child. Beneath the rabbit's tail was a seam closed with tiny stitches.

She opened it.

A brass key emerged first, wrapped in faded blue ribbon.

Then a photograph.

Claire stared at it.

“That's wrong.”

“What?”

“The letter was there.”

I took the photograph.

My father stood beside a marina.

Victor Kane stood next to him.

The third man was Luca.

The date on the photograph was six years old—years before Claire met Victor, before Lily existed.

Lily woke while we were examining it.

She saw the opened rabbit and immediately began to cry.

“Mommy broke Bunny.”

Claire gathered her close, apologizing.

Then Lily sniffed and asked, “Did you get Grandpa Tony's paper?”

Every adult stopped.

Claire stared at her daughter.

“You knew about it?”

Lily nodded.

“Where is it now?”

The little girl pointed toward the photograph of her backpack on Daniel's phone.

“The fixing man took it.”

Frank had entered Claire's apartment while she was unconscious. Floodlights turned the gardens white. Internal doors locked. Guards searched garages, storage rooms, mechanical spaces, roofs, and outbuildings.

Twenty-three minutes passed.

Nothing.

Then someone discovered an old maintenance tunnel open beneath the greenhouse.

My grandfather had constructed it decades earlier as a sheltered route between buildings during brutal Chicago winters. I believed it had been sealed for fifteen years.

Daniel and I entered with three guards.

Dust coated the stone passage. Frank's discarded jacket lay halfway down it.

The tunnel divided.

One direction led toward an old garage.

The other ended beneath my father's private study.

Nobody had entered that room since Antonio died.

A concealed panel behind a bookshelf opened into it.

The study smelled faintly of leather, old paper, and the cedar oil my father had always insisted the staff use on his desk. His unfinished chessboard remained beside the window.

For one stupid second, I expected him to be sitting there.

Then Daniel pointed at the carpet.

Muddy footprints.

Fresh.

They ended beside Antonio's desk.

One drawer had been opened.
