The girl's family opposed the relationship and forced circumstances that ended with the child being adopted. Antonio had been young, frightened, and powerless in ways I had never imagined him being.

For the first time, my father stopped existing in my memory as the immovable patriarch who always seemed to know what should be done.

I saw a nineteen-year-old boy losing his child.

“Why didn't he tell Luca and me after he found Matteo?”

“Matteo wouldn't let him.”

Claire stared at the table.

“He told me he had no family.”

“He believed he'd been abandoned.”

Luca's voice carried no judgment.

Antonio had spent decades ashamed of what happened. When he finally found Matteo, confession could not repair the lost years.

Matteo eventually began investigating Victor's financial network.

He discovered that Victor had been diverting money through companies linked to historical Moretti shipping operations. Some transactions concealed ordinary fraud. Others touched organized crime, bribery, and political corruption.

Antonio helped him build a case.

That was why Victor had appeared in the marina photograph.

That was why Luca had been involved.

And it was why Claire and Lily had become dangerous without understanding what they possessed.

Claire looked at Luca.

“If Victor doesn't care about Lily, why follow us?”

“Because Matteo disappeared after building the archive. Recorded conversations implicated businessmen whose names appeared on buildings throughout Chicago.

Yet Matteo's warning remained unanswered.

If Victor wasn't the greatest threat, who was?

The photograph gave us one candidate.

Jonathan Pierce.

I returned to the estate before evening.

Daniel wanted dinner canceled.

Luca wanted Pierce detained before he came within a mile of us.

I disagreed with both.

Pierce did not know exactly what we had discovered.

That was our only advantage.

Canceling the dinner would tell him we knew.

So at seven-thirty that evening, Jonathan Pierce drove through my gates exactly as planned.

He arrived in a navy suit, silver hair perfectly arranged, carrying a bottle of wine old enough to have an impressive story attached to it.

“Adrian.”

He embraced me.

I let him.

“You look terrible.”

“Long night.”

“So I heard.”

That sentence caught my attention.

“What did you hear?”

He smiled.

“Trouble with an employee.”

I poured him wine.

I drank water.

Claire and Lily had been moved into another section of the estate guarded personally by Daniel's most trusted team.
