afraid.

Claire did not move.

Neither did he.

Lily stared at the stranger.

Matteo stared back.

Years of hiding collapsed into a few feet of damp stone.

“Claire.”

She slapped him.

The sound echoed down the tunnel.

Victor smiled faintly.

Matteo accepted it.

“You deserved more than that.”

“Yes.”

Claire hit him again.

“That was for Lily.”

“I know.”

Lily whispered, “Mommy?”

Claire turned away from Matteo and gathered herself.

“It's okay.”

It clearly was not.

Matteo looked at me.

“Adrian.”

I had imagined meeting him for exactly a few hours, yet somehow I had imagined it many ways.

None included gunfire above us and Victor Kane holding a weapon nearby.

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Too much.”

“Did Dad know Claire before Lily was born?”

“Yes.”

“Did he pay Victor to make you disappear?”

“Yes.”

Luca stared at him.

“You let me believe Dad found you five years ago.”

“I needed you to believe the version Pierce believed.”

Luca stepped closer.

“I spent four years looking for you.”

“I know.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

Luca punched him.

Matteo hit the tunnel wall.

Victor sighed.

“Family reunions.”

I looked at him.

“Not now.”

Matteo wiped blood from his mouth.

“We need to leave.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Pierce has men above us.”

“And I have questions.”

“Ask them when Lily is safe.”

Claire finally agreed with him.

“He's right.”

That ended the argument.

We reached the boathouse.

Daniel was there.

Two of his men covered the shoreline.

The relief on his face when he saw us lasted until Victor emerged.

Then his gun rose.

“Put it down.”

Victor smirked.

“I've heard that a lot tonight.”

“Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“Not yet.”

He hated the order, but obeyed.

We moved toward the vehicles hidden beyond the trees.

Then Matteo stopped.

“What?”

He looked at Lily.

“The rabbit.”

Claire tightened her hold.

“What about it?”

“The eye chip was only the first key.”

He reached slowly toward Bunny.

Claire stepped back.

“You've hidden enough things in my daughter's toys.”

“I know.”

“What else is inside?”

Matteo's face changed.

“Something Antonio put there.”

I took the rabbit.

“What?”

He pointed to the faded stitching near one ear.

“My father did not die from heart trouble.”

The words came quietly.

“He was poisoned.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Luca went pale.

Matteo continued.

“Before he died, Antonio hid the only original recording proving Pierce ordered it.”

“Inside this?”

“No.”

He touched Bunny's ear.

“Inside the rabbit is a map to where he put it.”

Victor looked toward the lake house burning faintly through the trees.

Pierce's men were still moving in the distance.

Matteo turned to me.

“The archive can destroy Pierce politically.”

He pointed at Bunny.

“But what Antonio hid can convict him of murder.”

For the first time, I understood why Pierce had been willing to invade my home, expose his network, and risk everything over a child's toy.

He had never been hunting Lily.

He had been hunting the last words of a dead man.

And now all of us knew where the trail began.

<a
