true.”

She carried Lily toward the car.

Matteo did not follow.

I stood beside him.

“You can still go after them.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because she asked for space.”

“That never stopped anyone in this family.”

He looked at me.

“Maybe it should start.”

We returned to Chicago after sunrise.

The estate looked unchanged.

That was almost offensive.

Same stone walls.

Same gates.

Same fountain.

Yet every assumption I had carried through them the day before was gone.

Daniel's team lifted the floorboards in Claire's former apartment.

Beneath the third joist sat a sealed metal case.

Inside was Victor's original ledger.

Handwritten entries.

Names.

Payments.

Dates.

Pierce appeared throughout.

So did Michael.

So did men I had never heard of.

The final page contained Antonio's handwriting.

One sentence.

If this is found, the truth no longer belongs to our family.

By noon, copies were moving.

By one, federal agents requested emergency meetings.

By two, Pierce's office stopped answering calls.

At 2:17, Jonathan Pierce disappeared.

His car was found near the river.

No body.

Daniel expected flight.

Victor expected betrayal.

Matteo expected a final move.

I expected nothing.

Expectation had become expensive.

At 2:41, Claire came into my study.

Lily held her hand.

Bunny dragged along the floor.

“Someone is at the gate.”

“Who?”

Claire looked at me.

“Victor.”

Of course.

I checked the security feed.

Victor stood alone.

No weapon visible.

No escort.

He held a white envelope.

Daniel wanted him arrested on sight.

Federal agents were already looking into his role in kidnapping Lily.

Victor knew that.

Yet he had come anyway.

I went to the gate.

The steel remained between us.

“What?”

Victor raised the envelope.

“Pierce contacted me.”

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

“What does he want?”

“You.”

I almost laughed.

“He's had several opportunities.”

“He doesn't want to kill you.”

“That is reassuring.”

“He wants to trade.”

“For what?”

Victor looked past me toward the house.

“For Matteo.”

My expression changed.

“Why?”

“He says Matteo has something that isn't in the archive or ledger.”

“What?”

Victor slid the envelope through the gate.

Inside was a photograph.

Fresh.

Pierce stood beside a private aircraft.

Behind him was Evelyn Shaw.

Alive.

Not dead.

Victor had lied.

I looked up.

“You said Evelyn was dead.”

“I was told she was.”

“By whom?”

Victor's face hardened.

“Michael.”

Another layer.

I looked at the photograph again.

Evelyn held a newspaper from that morning.

On the back, written in black marker, were six words.

MATTEO KNOWS WHO KILLED ANTONIO FIRST.

First.

Not who killed Antonio.

Who killed him first.

The phrasing made no sense.

Until Matteo saw it.

He came up behind me.

I felt him stop.

“What does it mean?”

He did not answer.

“Matteo.”

His face had gone gray.

Victor watched him through the gate.

“You know.”

Matteo closed his eyes.

Then he said the sentence that reopened everything we thought we had solved.

“Antonio survived the poison.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Michael and Pierce did not kill Dad.”

“Then who did?”

Matteo looked toward the house.

Toward the room where our father's final recording had waited.

When he spoke again, his voice barely carried.

“I did.”

<a
