move from the car otherwise.

“Fine.”

We crossed the street.

The front doors were unlocked.

Inside, the air smelled faintly of candle wax, old wood and dust.

A woman near the entrance arranged hymnals on a cart.

I asked whether someone could help us locate an old storage area.

She directed us to the church office.

An elderly priest sat behind a desk piled with papers.

He introduced himself as Father Daniel.

When I said Carol’s name, his expression changed immediately.

“You’re her daughter.”

Not a question.

“You knew her?”

“I was a seminarian when she left.”

I placed the back.

“I wondered whether I would see it again.”

Liam shifted beside me.

“What does it open?”

The priest stood.

“Something your grandmother asked us to keep.”

He led us through a side hallway into an older portion of the building.

The walls changed from painted drywall to exposed brick.

We descended a short staircase.

At the bottom stood several storage rooms.

Father Daniel stopped beside a narrow wooden door.

“No one has opened this in years.”

“Richard Mitchell never searched here?”

“He tried.”

I looked at him.

“When?”

“More than cabinet.

Only a cramped archive room containing folding chairs, old banners, boxes of parish records and shelves of worn books.

I looked around.

“This is it?”

Father Daniel pointed to an old wooden kneeler against the wall.

Carol had donated it shortly before leaving town.

I ran my hand beneath the frame.

Metal touched my fingertips.

A small lockbox had been bolted underneath.

The key opened it.

Inside were three objects.

A cassette tape.

A bank safe-deposit receipt.

And a sealed plastic sleeve containing several sheets of paper.

No ledger.

No dramatic confession.

Yet the first page inside the sleeve carried Richard’s signature.

I sat on the floor.

Liam crouched beside me.

The documents dated back twenty-two years.

Invoices.

Transfer authorizations.

Internal accounting notes.

Carol’s annotations.

Names appeared repeatedly.

Richard Mitchell.

Atlantic Municipal Development challenged.”

“These are signed originals?”

“Yes.”

Melissa had been right.

Richard could call Carol a thief.

He could call me fraudulent.

He could accuse us of inventing records.

But original internal documents carrying his signature were different.

I examined the safe-deposit receipt.

The institution no longer existed under the same name.

A handwritten number appeared on the back.

Liam photographed everything.

“What’s on the tape?”

Father Daniel pointed toward an old player on the shelf.

The cassette label contained one word.

Richard.

My hands began to shake.

We inserted it.

Static filled the room.

Then Carol’s younger voice.

Calm.

Professional.

She asked a question about a payment.

Another voice answered.

Richard.

There was no mistaking him.

He sounded younger but carried the same measured impatience.

Carol asked why money allocated to a public redevelopment contract had been transferred through three private companies.

Richard told her to record the expenditure as consulting.

Carol said no consulting had occurred.

He told her she was an accountant, not an investigator.

She replied that falsifying the records would make her legally responsible.

Richard laughed.

Then he said something that made Liam look at me.

“If your name is on it, that’s what matters.”

The tape continued.

Carol asked whether he was asking her to commit fraud.

Richard said he was asking her to understand how business worked.

She refused.

His voice changed.

He mentioned me.

I was seventeen.

He said Carol should consider whether exposing influential people was worth disrupting her daughter’s future.

I stopped the tape.

My stomach turned.

Liam’s face had gone pale.

“He threatened you with Mom.”

“Yes,” Father Daniel said.

“He used Sarah before David ever met her.”

I stared at the cassette player.

My life had entered Richard’s plans before I knew his family existed.

“Play the rest.”

Carol asked him directly whether he was threatening her child.

Richard denied it.

Then said accidents happened when people involved themselves in matters beyond their understanding.

The recording ended soon afterward.

Liam whispered, “That’s enough.”

“No,” I said. “It’s not.”

I wanted enough that Richard could not explain it away.

Enough that no one could dismiss Carol as paranoid.

The safe-deposit receipt might provide that.

Father Daniel said the bank had merged twice.

The account could perhaps be traced.

I took out my phone.

There was still no signal in the archive room.

“Upstairs,” he said.

We returned toward the nave.

As soon as my phone connected, messages appeared.

Four from Melissa.

One from Chloe.

Three missed calls from numbers I did not recognize.

Melissa’s final text was only seconds old.

Do not come outside.

Liam saw it.

“Someone’s here.”

Father Daniel locked the archive room behind us.

Through a side window we could see the street.

Melissa’s white sedan was gone.

A black truck sat where it had been.

Two men stood near the church entrance.

Neither was David.

One was the man in the gray jacket.

Liam whispered, “He followed us.”

Father Daniel moved away from the window.

“There’s a rear exit through the cemetery.”

I asked, “Where’s Melissa?”

My phone rang.

Her number.

I answered.

David spoke.

“Did you find it?”

I looked at Liam.

“What did you do to Melissa?”

“She’s fine.”

“Put her know.”

“Then ask why she disappeared for three days afterward.”

My grip tightened.

“She told me they were followed.”

“She’s telling you the version Carol trained her to tell.”

“What does that mean?”

“I mean Melissa wasn’t just Carol’s friend.”

He paused.

“She worked for my father first.”

I looked toward the street.

The black truck remained outside.

“Where is she?”

“With me.”

“By choice?”

A long silence.

Then Melissa’s voice came faintly through the phone.

“Sarah, listen to me.”

“Are you okay?”

“Do not give them the documents.”

David said something away from the phone.

Melissa shouted.

The call ended.

Liam grabbed my arm.

“We have to go.”

“Not yet.”

I called emergency services.

This time I did not hesitate.

I told the dispatcher there were men outside the church, that we had evidence connected to fraud and threats, and that a woman might be held against her will.

Father Daniel gave the address.

The dispatcher instructed us to remain inside.

Five minutes later, sirens approached.

The men outside walked away before police arrived.

The truck left.

Officers searched the area.

Nobody was found.

One officer took our immediate statements.

Another examined the documents without touching them.

When I mentioned forged deeds and shell companies, his posture changed.

“This may need state and federal involvement.”

“Good.”

For the first time since arriving in Wilmington, hearing the word federal felt reassuring.

Then Liam’s phone buzzed.

A message from Chloe.

Dad took Melissa to the old marina office.

I showed it to the officer.

He called it in.

The marina was less than fifteen minutes away.

Police told us to stay at the church.

I agreed.

Then my phone rang again.

Chloe.

She discovering Liam’s trap.

“What do the altered numbers lead to?” I asked.

Liam hesitated.

“An old storage locker.”

“Containing laughed.

It was not amused.

“You think this is a game.”

“No.”

I looked down at Carol’s original documents.

“I think it’s almost over.”

His voice hardened.

“You have no idea what ending this creates.”

“Then come explain it to the police.”

He hung up.

Within minutes, another officer entered the church.

They had located David’s car at the old marina.

Inside the office, they found Melissa.

Alive.

David was gone.

Richard was gone.

But Melissa had not been alone.

A second person had been found tied in a back room.

The officer
