her mouth.

I understood then that the man who had taken over my mother’s home had not simply become desperate after a failed business.

He had developed a method.

Find trust.

Gain access.

Create dependency.

Move money.

Explain everything as generosity.

Our family had not been his first opportunity.

We were simply the family whose circumstances had finally exposed him.

The house felt different that evening.

Not because the locks were new.

Because Mom could walk into any room without wondering whether she belonged there.

Khloe stayed with us temporarily.

She slept in her old room and spent long hours reading financial statements she had once avoided.

Sometimes she cried.

Sometimes Mom sat beside her.

I wasn’t ready to forgive her.

Neither was I interested in punishing her forever.

There would be time to decide what our relationship could become.

For now, facts mattered.

Near sunset, Harrison arrived.

He placed another legal document on the dining table.

“What’s this?”

“An emergency application to freeze assets.”

“Julian’s?”

“Julian’s, his brother’s, and instinctively toward her stomach.

Then her phone began vibrating.

Julian.

She rejected the call.

It rang again.

And again.

By the twenty-seventh attempt, he sent a message instead.

Khloe read it.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She turned the phone toward us.

Julian wanted to meet her alone.

Thirty minutes.

No lawyers.

No Natalie.

No Martha.

He claimed everyone was lying to her.

Khloe stared at the screen for a long time.

Then she looked at me.

“I need to see him.”

“No.”

“I need to hear what he says when he thinks nobody else is
