punishment.

Accountability.

At two in the morning, another call came.

This time from one of the investigators.

Julian had attempted to contact Khloe from a second phone.

He told her to destroy documents hidden inside the house.

The investigator asked if we knew what he meant.

I looked across the kitchen at Khloe.

She slowly shook her head.

Mom did the same.

“What documents?” I asked.

“We don’t know.”

“Where did he say they were?”

A pause.

“Inside the piano.”

I turned toward the living room.

Dad’s piano sat against the far wall.

The same piano Julian and Khloe had partially hidden behind decorative furniture.

The same piano Dad had played every Sunday evening when we were children.

I walked toward it.

Something was taped beneath the lower wooden panel.

A thick envelope.

Harrison arrived twenty minutes later.

We opened it with an investigator present.

Inside were copies of bank statements, signed forms, account numbers, passwords, and photocopies of identification belonging to nine people.

At the bottom lay a handwritten ledger.

Dates.

Names.

Dollar amounts.

Mom pointed to one entry.

“That’s Mrs. Bell.”

An elderly widow from church.

Another name belonged to Mr. Hart, who had moved into assisted living the previous year.

Then I saw Mom’s name.

Beside it was a figure larger than seventy-two thousand.

I stared at Harrison.

“That can’t be right.”

He looked closer.

The ledger showed another withdrawal.

One we had never seen.

One dated months before my return.

One hundred twenty-five thousand dollars.

Mom whispered, “From where?”

Harrison turned the page.

Then he went still.

“Not from your checking account.”

“Then where?”

He looked at me.

“The house.”
