Red and blue reflections slid across the rear glass, pulsing over the back seat and the cardboard evidence box secured behind the passenger seat. Victoria glanced at her speedometer. Fifty-three. The posted limit was fifty-five.

Her eyes moved to the mirror again. The patrol car had been behind her for almost two miles. She had noticed it shortly after merging onto the county road, first at a distance and then steadily closer. It had made no attempt to pass. There had been no checkpoint, no collision, no traffic violation she could identify.

Victoria eased off the accelerator and guided her gray sedan onto the shoulder. Gravel cracked beneath the tires. She stopped well beyond the white line, shifted into park, and left both hands resting where they could be seen on the steering wheel.

The patrol vehicle stopped several yards behind her.
