looking.”

Julian's “future” was unraveling into movements of money and disappearing relatives.

That evening we returned home.

Mom had made soup.

The ordinary smell of onions, carrots and thyme nearly undid me.

We sat together at the kitchen table.

For the first time, Khloe told Mom everything.

The debt.

The hidden credit accounts.

The documents.

The meeting with Julian.

When she reached the part about the recording, Mom listened silently.

Then Khloe said, “He told me you needed to change your statement.”

Mom's spoon stopped.

“What did you say?”

“No.”

Mom nodded.

That single nod carried more forgiveness than Khloe deserved yet and less than she wanted.

After dinner, Khloe helped wash dishes.

No one asked her.

That mattered too.

At nine, Harrison called.

“We've located a property connected to one of Julian's companies.”

“What kind of property?”

“A warehouse.”

“Where?”

“Outside San Marcos.”

I walked away from the kitchen.

“What does that have to do with the accounts?”

“We're not sure.”

“What's inside?”

“That is why I'm calling.”

His voice had changed.

“Investigators served a warrant this evening.”

I looked through the kitchen doorway.

Mom and Khloe were drying dishes together.

“What did they find?”

“Boxes of financial records.”

My grip tightened on the phone.

“How many?”

“Hundreds of files.”

I closed my eyes.

Harrison continued.

“Names, account statements, copies of identification, signed authorization forms.”

“This was organized.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Years.”

The problem had grown beyond our house.

Beyond Mom.

Beyond the seventy-two thousand.

Beyond the trust.

Julian hadn't stumbled into exploiting people while desperate.

He had built a system.

Then Harrison gave me the final piece.

“One of the files was labeled with your mother's name.”

I looked toward Mom.

“What was in it?”

“Copies of her banking records.”

“That isn't surprising.”

“There was something else.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“A file with your name.”

I said nothing.

“What was in mine?”

“We don't know yet.”

“Harrison.”

“The investigators haven't released the full contents.”

“Then tell me what they did release.”

He hesitated.

“A copy of your passport.”

I went cold.

“And?”

“A document bearing your signature.”

I stared into the dark window above the sink.

I hadn't signed anything for Julian.

Ever.

“What document?”

Harrison's voice became very quiet.

“A power of attorney.”

<a
