thirty-eight thousand dollars in cash, and a folder of documents he'd apparently been preparing to destroy.

One document concerned Ruth Lyman.

Another concerned Mom.

A third concerned Khloe.

Then Pierce found something that made him call us back to Harrison's office.

A draft letter.

It was written as though Khloe had authored it.

She hadn't.

The letter stated that Martha had voluntarily given Khloe and Julian control of her finances.

It claimed Natalie knew about the arrangement.

It claimed any transfer from Dad's trust had been approved as an advance for the unborn grandchild.

It even stated that the disputed signature on the power of attorney was genuine.

Khloe read it once.

Then again.

“He was going to make this my statement.”

Harrison nodded.

“Or produce it as evidence of what you into cash withdrawals.”

“How much can be recovered?”

“Most of it may still be recoverable through frozen assets.”

I closed my eyes.

Dad had remembered once teasing him for planning college funds for imaginary children.

He had shrugged.

“They won't always be imaginary.”

Now Khloe's baby matters.”

I waited.

“A notary.”

Harrison later explained why.

The forged power of attorney had supposedly been notarized.

If the notary knowingly participated, Julian's paperwork had not been a solo effort.

The notary, a woman named Rebecca Sloan, was located the next day.

At first she denied knowing Julian.

Then investigators showed her financial transfers.

Her memory improved.

She admitted notarizing documents without all signers physically present.

She insisted Julian told her everyone had already agreed.

Then Pierce showed her my supposed signature.

Rebecca stared at it.

“I never met this woman.”

That single statement damaged Julian's defense more than hours of argument could have.

She had authenticated a signature from someone she had never seen.

Mine.

Rebecca began cooperating.

She identified eleven documents prepared under similar circumstances.

Three concerned Mom.

Two concerned me.

Several concerned older clients.

One concerned Ruth Lyman.

That was the document Pierce cared about most.

It had been notarized the same day Ruth died.

A beneficiary-related authorization.

Rebecca claimed Julian brought it to her already signed.

Ruth's signature appeared at the bottom.

Harold was shown a copy.

He stared for nearly a minute.

“That isn't Ruth's.”

The investigation into her death widened.

Police obtained Ruth's medical records.

The original death had been classified as accidental trauma after a fall.

No autopsy beyond the standard examination had been requested because no one reported suspicious circumstances.

Harold had accepted the explanation.

Why wouldn't he?

His wife was elderly.

She had balance problems.

There were stairs.

Now investigators examined photographs from the scene.

A detective who specialized in cold-case review noticed something.

The bruising on Ruth's upper arm.

Not proof of assault.

But unusual enough to deserve attention when combined with everything else.

Harold broke down when Pierce told him.

“I should've protected her.”

Mom sat beside him during that conversation.

“You trusted someone.”

Harold shook his head.

“So did you.”

Mom looked at him.

“Yes.”

He stared at her bruised hands.

For once, she did not minimize what had happened.

“Yes,” she repeated. “I did.”

Two victims sat together and let that truth exist without shame.

Khloe had a harder task.

She had to listen while investigators described a night she might have helped obscure.

She offered to surrender the washing machine from the old house.

Pierce explained that after fourteen months and countless loads, forensic value was uncertain.

“But uncertain isn't zero,” he said.

Technicians removed portions of the drain trap and inspected the laundry area anyway.

They also searched the recovered storage unit for the shirt.

They found dozens of men's shirts.

None clearly matched Khloe's memory.

Then, almost accidentally, investigators found a photograph.

It had been taken at a restaurant three days before Ruth's death.

Julian wore a pale blue dress shirt with a distinctive stitched cuff.

Khloe recognized it instantly.

“That one.”

A second photograph from two weeks later showed Julian at another event.

Different shirt.

The pale blue shirt never appeared again.

Its absence proved nothing.

But the picture gave investigators a precise item to search for.

Meanwhile, Julian's attorney began issuing statements.

His client denied exploiting anyone.

All transfers were authorized.

Business failures were being mischaracterized as fraud.

Family disagreements had been exaggerated because I had returned from abroad and wanted control.

When I heard that last claim, I laughed.

“What kind of control?”

Harrison shrugged.

“The kind defendants accuse other people of wanting when the documents are bad.”

Julian also claimed Mom had been compensated for household work.

Mom listened to that statement at the kitchen counter.

“Compensated with what?”

No one answered.

She opened a drawer.

Inside were envelopes containing old grocery receipts she had kept because Julian demanded she account for cash purchases.

She spread them across the counter.

“He used to make me explain thirty dollars.”

Her voice sharpened.

“While taking three thousand.”

That evening, she asked me to help her photograph every receipt.

Not because the case needed all of them.

Because she needed to see the record for herself.

A pattern of control made physical.

Milk.

Cleaning products.

Bread.

Garden fertilizer.

Every ordinary expense scrutinized while Julian treated entire bank accounts as his own.

Near midnight, Khloe received a message from an unknown number.

She almost deleted it.

Then she read the first line.

You know what really happened at Ruth's.

Her hands started shaking.

She showed me.

The next line said:

Tell them you were there too.

Khloe stared at me.

“I wasn't.”

“Don't respond.”

Another message arrived.

You helped clean it.

I called Pierce.

He instructed us to preserve the messages.

A third appeared.

If Julian goes down, you go with him.

Mom came into the room.

Khloe handed her the phone.

Mom read the messages
