Surprise could pass through his face and vanish before most people noticed it had been there. I had spent half my childhood watching him improvise explanations for bills he had not paid, promises he had forgotten, and money that had disappeared. By the time I became an attorney, I could read every small delay in his performance.

His eyes went to Vanessa.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Enough.

“I don't know what you're talking about,” he said.

“You came here carrying documents for a trust Ethan supposedly established. The baby moved beneath my hand. A small heel pressed outward and disappeared again. That tiny motion gave me something solid to focus on.

Four months earlier, Ethan had sat across from me in his study with two laptops open between us.

He had looked unusually serious.

“Your father is trying to access one of my investment entities.”

I remembered laughing once, because the idea seemed almost absurd.

“Richard can barely remember his own banking password.”

“He doesn't have to be technically competent.
