silk robe.

Her laugh.

Her insistence that Ethan's health problems were known.

Her terror inside the sealed study.

If Vanessa had discovered that Richard had manipulated her entire life, perhaps she had reason to hate him.

But Ethan?

“What did she need from Ethan?” I asked.

Maya understood.

“Proof.”

“Proof of paternity.”

“Yes.”

“And if he discovered Richard knew the truth?”

“He could expose everything.”

My phone replacement vibrated again.

This time Harris took it immediately.

A secure message from one of his agents.

He read it.

Then looked at me.

“What?”

“Vanessa isn't at her attorney's office.”

“Where is she?”

“We're finding out.”

Another message arrived.

Harris's expression changed.

“What happened?”

He turned the screen toward Maya.

I could not see it from the bed.

Maya read aloud.

“First Dominion Private Bank reported a woman using forged Caldwell estate credentials entered the private-box level fourteen minutes ago.”

My incision pulled as I sat upright.

“Vanessa.”

Harris was already moving.

“We don't know yet.”

“We do.”

He headed toward the door.

I called after him.

“Harris.”

He turned.

“If she opens Box 314 first, she'll destroy whatever frightens her.”

He nodded.

Then Maya's phone rang.

She checked the caller.

First Dominion.

She answered.

“This is Maya Chen.”

Her face changed almost immediately.

“Yes, that's my authorization code.”

Pause.

“No. I did not give anyone permission to use it.”

Another pause.

“How long ago?”

Maya looked at Harris.

“Lock down the building.”

The person on the other end said something else.

Maya went still.

“What do you mean she isn't alone?”

She listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“Who?” I asked.

Maya stared at me.

“Security says Vanessa entered with a man.”

“Richard is in custody.”

“I know.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

“Jonathan?”

She swallowed.

“They identified him from his firm's website.”

My heart dropped.

“Jonathan.”

Maya nodded.

The two people who had spent hours claiming to fear each other had gone together to the one place Ethan told us to search.

And for the first time, I understood something Ethan's note had tried to warn me about.

Do not trust anyone merely because I
