whose account had received the forty-one thousand dollars from Dad’s grandchildren’s trust.

Harrison showed us the still image.

Marcus wore a baseball cap and sunglasses, but his face was clear when he turned toward the register.

“Can they prove Julian told him to send the picture?” I asked.

“Not yet.”

Khloe stared at greed.

Marcus’s loyalty.

Evelyn Price’s loneliness.

He built schemes out of predictable human needs.

The prosecutors obtained a warrant for Marcus’s devices.

By then, Marcus had hired his own attorney.

His loyalty lasted approximately forty-eight hours.

When investigators confronted him with the trust transfer, the prepaid phone, and business records, he began negotiating.

Marcus claimed he had believed Julian’s explanations at first.

The forty-one thousand dollars, Julian told him, belonged to the family and needed to be moved temporarily because Natalie was trying to seize control.

Marcus accepted the transfer.

Then he kept ten thousand dollars as a “loan.”

“That sounds convenient,” I said.

Harrison agreed.

But Marcus offered something investigators wanted more.

Messages.

Julian had sent him instructions.

One exchange occurred the night I came home.

Julian: Natalie showed up early.

Marcus: Problem?

Julian: Big one.

Marcus: What do you need?

Julian: Move the trust money tonight.

Marcus: Thought you had time.

Julian: Not anymore.

Then, twenty minutes later:

Julian: If Khloe flips, I have proof she signed everything.

Marcus: Does she know?

Julian: She doesn’t need to.

I stared at the final sentence.

Khloe did too.

“She doesn’t need to.”

Her voice was almost inaudible.

Mom stood behind her.

Khloe did not cry.

That worried me more than tears would have.

She simply read the messages again.

Then she asked Harrison, “Can I have a copy?”

“Your attorney can obtain it.”

“I want to remember exactly what he spent two years preparing to bury me with it.”

The financial investigation widened again.

Marcus surrendered documents from a storage account Julian had apparently forgotten he could access.

There were spreadsheets.

Draft affidavits.

Scanned signatures.

Copies of Mom’s identification.

Copies of Khloe’s identification.

Even copies of my passport from an old family travel folder.

One folder contained files labeled contingency.

Inside were prepared explanations for several possible problems.

If Mom challenged the transfers, she was confused.

If I challenged the house, Mom had promised it away.

If Khloe cooperated with investigators, she had orchestrated the finances.

If Marcus questioned the trust transfer, he had accepted part of the money.

Every relationship had a trap built into it.

Then investigators found a document labeled MEDICAL.

Harrison asked Mom and me to come to his office before showing it.

It was a draft petition.

Not filed.

Not signed.

But nearly complete.

It sought emergency guardianship over Martha Brooks.

The proposed guardian was Julian Carter.

The petition described Mom as forgetful, financially irresponsible, vulnerable to manipulation by an absent daughter, and unable to manage basic daily needs.

I read one sentence twice.

Martha frequently neglects meals unless supervised.

My hands began shaking.

He had withheld grocery money.

Then documented the consequences as evidence of incapacity.

Another sentence:

Martha demonstrates difficulty maintaining the residence.

He had made her clean the house.

Then intended to use any failure to keep up as proof she could not care for herself.

Mom read making me fail tests I didn’t know I was taking.”

Nobody answered.

Because that was exactly what he had been doing.

When she turned around, her expression had changed.

For weeks, Mom had looked wounded by every new discovery.

This time she looked angry.

Not frightened.

Not ashamed.

Angry.

“I want to testify.”

Harrison folded his hands.

“There may eventually be a trial.”

“I don’t mean eventually.”

“What do you
