cheaper facility cost roughly $1,100 less per month.

That difference mattered if he wanted to maximize cash from the Birch Street sale.

Tessa asked whether Daniel wanted to leave said alone proved criminal intent.

But it gave investigators directions.

She had also requested Marcus’s guardianship communications and bank records.

Outside, Dad sat on a bench.

“I spent half my life refusing to think about Daniel because I couldn’t reconcile what he did with what happened to him.”

I sat beside check.

The beneficiary changes.

The line of credit.

One detective asked whether we believed anyone intended physical harm toward Dad.

Dad looked at me.

“I don’t know.”

That was the only truthful answer.

The detective asked about the basement railing.

Dad described the near fall.

He also mechanic invoice showed a damaged brake line.

Likely corrosion, according to the notes.

Probably ordinary.

But after everything else, ordinary explanations no longer stayed ordinary.

The detective warned us not to jump to conclusions.

We agreed.

Then Rachel called.

She had found something in Marcus’s hotel rewards account.

A reservation from four months earlier.

Two rooms.

One for Marcus.

One for Cynthia.

Not romantic, as far as she could tell.

The hotel was in the same city as Dad’s pension administrator.

On the dates when the beneficiary change had been submitted.

Marcus had not merely known about the paperwork.

He had traveled with Cynthia while it was being arranged.

Rachel forwarded the receipts.

The next morning, police executed a search warrant on Cynthia’s office after evidence connected her to multiple suspected fraudulent notarizations.

The news spread through the family quickly.

Mom called me.

“Sarah, I need to see you.”

I almost been a test.

A demonstration of the strategy.

Use Dad.

Create urgency.

Make refusal embarrassing.

Ask afterward.

My son’s hot dog had exposed
