house.”

Hensley continued.

“The deed was recorded six months ago.”

David stood abruptly.

“That shouldn't be possible.”

“What name is on it?” I asked.

“Yours.”

“And whose signature?”

“Yours.”

I looked around my kitchen.

The house Margaret had protected.

The home Robert had promised Irene he would sell.

The property he had pledged for debt.

Somewhere in county records, a forged document apparently claimed I had already given it away.

“When?” David asked.

I relayed the date.

He froze.

Then looked at me.

“What?”

“That was the week you were hospitalized for your final reconstruction surgery.”

I remembered.

Three nights under sedation.

Robert bringing papers to the hospital.

Insurance forms.

Discharge forms.

Documents I barely remembered seeing.

One afternoon he had insisted I that.”

“But what if I did?”

“Then we determine whether you had capacity, whether the document was misrepresented, and whether the notarization is notarization.”

“Yes?”

“The notary listed on the transfer deed was Sandra Lewis.”

I stared at the table.

Sandra.

Robert's former secretary.

The woman who had stood in the ballroom and confessed she had helped hide his affairs.

The woman who warned me about the ledger.

David took the phone from my hand.

He asked several questions.

Then ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

Finally Andrew said, “Do you think Sandra helped him take the house?”

David answered carefully.

“I think we need to ask her.”

I looked toward Margaret's roses outside.

Every clue we had uncovered had pointed toward Robert.

Now, for the first time, someone who had appeared to be helping me was written directly into the fraud.

I picked up my phone.

Sandra answered almost immediately.

“Teresa?”

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Did you notarize a deed transferring Willow Creek to Robert's
