Andrew contacted a digital-evidence specialist working with his firm. Within the hour the files were copied without altering the originals.

Then we listened.

Harold’s voice filled the small office.

I had not heard it in four years.

The sound struck me harder than the contents at first.

He cleared his throat exactly as he used to.

His chair squeaked.

A cup touched a table.

Then Caleb spoke.

The conversation began calmly.

Harold asked about account discrepancies.

Caleb pretended not to understand.

Harold started naming customers.

One after another.

Amounts.

Dates.

Properties.

Companies.

Caleb’s voice changed.

He told Harold he was confused.

Harold answered that confusion had apparently become very profitable.

Renata entered the conversation later.

Her tone was harder than Caleb’s.

She accused Harold of trying to ruin Daniel’s family.

Harold said Daniel’s family was ruining itself.

Then came the part that made Andrew stop taking notes.

Renata admitted she had supplied information about older account holders.

Not in clean legal language.

But clearly enough.

She argued that most of them had money they would never spend.

Harold asked who had given her the right to decide that.

Caleb told him to stop recording.

Harold laughed.

So Caleb knew.

The recording ended with Caleb threatening consequences if Harold went to authorities.

Not a direct death threat.

Something colder.

“You have a family too,” he said.

Harold answered, “That is exactly why I’m doing this.”

The file ended.

Nobody moved.

Andrew looked at me.

“This is serious organized financial gone.

Daniel did not answer.

Then Harold said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

He told our son that protecting someone from the consequences of wrongdoing was not the same as protecting a family.

Daniel accused him of hating Renata.

Harold replied that hatred had nothing to do with evidence.

The conversation ended with Daniel saying, “If Mom finds out, this will destroy her.”

Harold answered quietly.

“No. The lie will.”

I closed my eyes.

Andrew stopped the just as Daniel had described.

Harold confronted Renata with the forged withdrawals.

He told her Caleb’s scheme was finished.

Renata demanded the papers.

Harold refused.

Daniel pleaded.

A chair scraped.

Footsteps.

Their voices moved farther away.

Into the kitchen.

Renata shouted.

Something struck the floor.

Then came a terrible impact.

I stopped breathing.

Daniel cried, “Dad?”

Harold groaned.

Renata said, “Don’t touch
