it slowly.

“This clause.”

Victoria leaned over.

The agreement required Richard to pay my father a percentage of revenue from several development projects that were still existed under a different corporate structure.

Another had been sold.

A third appeared linked to one of the entities transferring money into the offshore account.

My father stared at the screen.

“You’re telling me he’s still using those assets?”

“It appears possible.”

The million-dollar balance now looked different.

Some of the money might trace back to my inheritance.

Some might be Daniel’s business income.

And some might have originated from assets Richard had concealed from my father years ago.

The scheme had not begun with me.

I had simply become its newest source of capital.

At 2:30 in the morning, my phone buzzed.

Daniel.

I declined it.

He called again.

Then a message arrived.

We need to talk before you do something you’ll regret.

I showed Victoria.

“Do not respond.”

Another message appeared.

Richard says your father is filling your head with old lies.

My father read it over my shoulder.

His face changed.

“Give me the phone.”

“No.”

“Emma.”

“No. He wants us angry.”

My father looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

A third message arrived.

You’re going to destroy your own family.

That sentence made something inside me settle.

Daniel had spent months dismantling our marriage, using my inheritance, financing a life with another woman and collaborating with my uncle.

Now that I had discovered it, protecting the family had somehow become my responsibility.

I typed nothing.

The following morning, Victoria arranged service.

Daniel would receive divorce papers at the Miami condo.

The emergency financial order accompanied them.

We knew he might not be there, so a second service attempt was prepared through his attorney if he retained one.

At 11:06, the process server reported success.

Daniel had returned to the condo.

He opened the door himself.

I imagined his face as he read my name.

My phone began ringing less than three minutes later.

I let it ring.

Then came messages.

Emma, answer me.

You don’t understand what you’re doing.

Richard handled the investments.

Olivia lied to you.

Call me now.

Then one arrived that was different.

Please.

I stared at that word.

Daniel rarely said please when he believed he could control the outcome.

At 11:22, Olivia called Victoria.

Daniel had received the papers, shouted at her and accused her of betraying him.

Then he had demanded her phone.

She refused.

According to Olivia, Daniel left the condo carrying the portable file box.

The investigator followed him.

For nearly two hours, Daniel drove through Miami traffic.

Then he entered the underground parking garage of a commercial building connected to one of Richard’s companies.

Marcus recognized the address.

Daniel stayed inside forty-three minutes.

When he emerged, the file box was gone.

But the investigator had photographed someone meeting him.

The image arrived while we were still reviewing my father’s old settlement.

A man in his late fifties stood beside Daniel near the garage entrance.

Not Richard.

Someone else.

Marcus compared the photograph with corporate records.

His face tightened.

“M.C.”

He turned the screen toward us.

The man’s name was Martin Cole.

He was the chief financial officer of Daniel’s employer.

The same company supposedly sending Daniel to Toronto.

I felt the room go very quiet.

“So his employer is involved?”

Victoria shook her head.

“We know one executive is involved. Don’t jump beyond the evidence.”

Marcus opened another filing.

Martin Cole was also an officer of the New York consulting entity receiving company funds.

The fake Toronto assignment suddenly made sense in another way.

Daniel had not invented it completely alone.

Someone inside his company had helped create the cover.

My phone rang again.

This time the caller ID showed Daniel’s employer.

Victoria told me to answer.

A woman introduced herself as Rebecca Shaw, general counsel.

“Mrs. Carter,” she said carefully, “I believe we need to speak about your husband.”

I looked at Martin Cole’s photograph.

“I think we do.”

Her next sentence answered a question I had not yet known to ask.

“There is no Toronto assignment.”

I closed my eyes.

“I know.”

She paused.

“Then I suspect you know more than we do.”

“I doubt that.”

“We’ve been reviewing irregular payments authorized by our CFO.”

Martin.

“How long?”

“Since this morning.”

That timing was not coincidence.

“What happened this morning?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“Someone anonymously delivered internal documents.”

I looked at Victoria.

Another anonymous disclosure.

First the photographs of Daniel and Olivia.

Then the USB drive.

Now Daniel’s employer.

Someone had been feeding evidence to each person capable of stopping the scheme.

“Do you know who sent them?”

“No.”

Neither did we.

But the mystery had become impossible to ignore.

Someone had known about Daniel, Richard and Martin before I did.

Someone had access to private documents.

And whoever that person was had waited until the exact moment Daniel’s plan began to collapse.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Anonymous Source Finally Stepped Out of the Shadows, and His Connection to My Grandmother Explained Why Daniel’s Scheme Had Never Been Completely Invisible

The figure sat on Marcus’s screen like a challenge.
