The letters leaned forward. The message on the napkin was more controlled.

Then I found a card she had written to my mother.

There was something about the capital letters.

The way the crossbars sat slightly too high.

The shape of the lowercase g.

I put the samples side by side.

Similar.

Not identical.

I called my mother and sent photographs.

She called back within two minutes.

"Where did you get that?"

"What does it look like to you?"

"Her handwriting."

"You're sure?"

"No."

That irritated me.

"You just said—"

"I said it looks like hers. People can have similar handwriting."

"But you noticed it too."

Silence.

"Yes."

I sat at the kitchen table.

"My son says a woman gave it to him."

"What woman?"

"The woman from the dream."

My mother said nothing.

I told her everything he had described.

The bright silver room.

The unknown woman.

The apology.

The fact that she seemed older than the mother he remembered from photographs.

My mother's voice changed.

"This isn't funny."

"I know."

"Are you saying you think his mother is taking him out of the house while you're asleep?"

"I don't know what I'm saying."

"Then call the police."

"And tell them what?"

"That someone has been near your child."

"With no forced entry?"

"That doesn't matter."

"No security alert, no missing time, no witness, no physical injury."

"What about the marks?"

"They vanish within hours."

"The fillings."

"A dentist can verify those."

"Exactly."

I rubbed my forehead.

"What if I'm wrong?"

"What if you're right?"

After we hung up, I checked every door and window.

All locked.

I inspected the outside of the house.

Nothing looked disturbed.

There was no plausible way for someone to enter my son's bedroom without crossing either the hallway outside my room or the staircase that creaked under the weight of a cat.

We didn't own a cat.

The stairs still creaked.

That night, I left my bedroom door open.

I slept badly.

Every sound woke me.

The furnace.

A car outside.

Pipes shifting.

At 3:11 a.m., I thought I heard footsteps and rushed into the hallway.

Nothing.

My son's door was closed.

I opened it quietly.

He slept beneath a tangled blanket with one leg hanging over the side of the mattress.

Completely normal.

I stood there long enough to feel ridiculous.

The following morning, he complained.

"You came into my room."

"How'd you know?"

"You stepped on my controller."

"I didn't."

"Then somebody did."

We found it beside the bed.

The casing had a new crack.

I remembered feeling something under my foot.

"Okay. Sorry."

He shook his head with theatrical disappointment.

"Unbelievable parenting."

I made pancakes.

For several days, nothing happened.

The silence should have calmed me.

Instead it made me more alert.

I began checking him every morning for marks.

I inspected his teeth with a flashlight, though I had no idea what I expected to see.

I checked the locks before bed, then checked them again.

By Thursday, I understood that I could not continue indefinitely.

I needed objective evidence.

If someone entered his room, I needed to see them.

If he sleepwalked, I needed to know.

If nothing happened, maybe I could begin believing the dentist's mystery had a mundane explanation.

That afternoon, I bought a small motion-sensitive indoor camera.

I told my son I wanted to see whether he was sleepwalking.

He frowned at it.

"That's creepy."

"Fair."

"You're going to record me sleeping?"

"Only for a few nights."

"What if I pick my nose?"

"I'll preserve the footage for your wedding."

He threw a pillow at me.

Humor helped.

For about ten minutes.

I mounted the camera where it could see his bed, window, and bedroom door.

I tested the motion alerts.

They worked.

That night, he went to sleep shortly after ten.

I sat downstairs with the television on but barely watched it.

At midnight, nothing.

At one, nothing.

At two, still nothing.

I almost turned off the monitor.

Then, at 2:37 a.m., my phone vibrated.

MOTION DETECTED.

I opened the live feed.

My son's room appeared in grainy low light.

He was asleep.

The door remained closed.

The window remained shut.

No person stood beside his bed.

I almost laughed with relief.

Then the blanket shifted.

My son moved upward.

At first I thought he was sitting.

He wasn't.

His entire body rose from the mattress.

Slowly.

Silently.

His shoulders lifted first, then his hips, then his legs.

Within seconds, there was empty space between his body and the bed.

I stopped breathing.

No one touched him.

Nothing supported him.

He floated horizontally in the darkness, arms hanging loosely at his sides.

The clock on the camera continued counting.

2:37:12.

2:37:13.

2:37:14.

I watched my sleeping child remain suspended in open air.

Then a faint light appeared near the base of his skull.

Not in the room.

Under his skin.

A tiny silver pulse.

Once.

Twice.

The video distorted.

For less than a second, the entire image filled with static.

When it cleared, my son was descending.

He settled gently onto the mattress.

The blanket fell around him.

He never woke.

I ran upstairs.

His door was still closed.

I entered and touched his shoulder.

Warm.

Breathing normally.

No wound.

No visible light.

Nothing.

"Dad?"

He opened his eyes.

"I'm here."

"What happened?"

"Nothing."

He blinked sleepily.

Then he looked past me toward the camera.

"Oh."

"What?"

His eyes closed again.

"You saw it."

Every hair on my arms lifted.

"Saw what?"

But he had already drifted back to sleep.

I remained beside the bed until sunrise.

When morning finally came, I knew one thing with complete certainty.

The dentist had not made a mistake.

And whatever had happened to my son was bigger than two unexplained fillings.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Camera Recorded Something No Parent Could Explain, and One Sentence From My Son Changed What I Believed About the Woman Watching Him

My son stood three steps above me, one hand resting on the banister.
