It isn't a stabilizer. It's a lock."

I moved closer to the monitor.

"A lock on what?" I asked, although the recording could not answer.

My older self did.

"On the memory that starts everything."

The screen flickered.

"The trigger occurs on his eleventh birthday. It always does."

Three weeks.

My mother whispered, "Oh God."

The recording continued.

"When the memory opens, he remembers the original sequence."

Original.

Not one of the corrected futures.

The first one.

My future self looked older than the date on the screen should have allowed.

"There are reasons Mara kept changing events. Reasons I helped her later. But every correction made the original memory stronger."

He glanced toward our adult son.

"We thought we could erase it."

The young man laughed bitterly.

"You can't erase me."

My future self looked at him.

"I'm not erasing you."

"You already did. Thirty-two times."

The pain in that exchange made my chest ache.

The recording froze.

The unseen man controlling Calder spoke again.

"Your son becomes fully aware in twenty-one days."

I looked toward the speaker.

"What happens then?"

"He remembers every corrected sequence simultaneously."

"That would kill him."

"Possibly."

"Possibly?"

"The human brain wasn't designed for layered temporal memory."

"Then stop it."

"That is why you're here."

A compartment opened beneath one of the monitors.

Inside lay a metal case.

I didn't touch it.

"What is that?"

"A resonator extraction tool."

My stomach tightened.

"You want me to remove the device."

"The cranial lock."

"Why?"

"Because while it remains active, we can't access the original memory."

"Why do you need it?"

No answer.

I stepped away from the case.

"Open the door."

"We need the original sequence."

"I don't care what you need."

"You should."

The monitors changed again.

A date appeared.

October 3, 2026.

My son's birthday.

Below it:

PRIMARY CASCADE EVENT.

The screen filled with images.

Power grids failing.

Satellites dropping offline.

Aircraft grounded.

Hospitals dark.

Traffic systems dead.

Not explosions.

Not war.

Everything simply stopped communicating.

"What is that?"

"The outcome Mara spent years preventing."

"How?"

"Your son remembers how it begins."

I laughed in disbelief.

"He's ten."

"In this sequence."

The man's voice remained calm.

"In the original, he was twenty-seven when the cascade occurred."

My skin prickled.

"You're saying he remembers being an adult."

"He remembers many adults."

The phrase was monstrous.

I thought of my child sleeping upstairs, complaining about homework and forgetting his shoes.

How many lives existed beneath those ordinary memories?

"Why does the cascade happen?"

"We don't know."

"You're asking me to risk his brain for information you don't understand."

"We're asking you to prevent billions of deaths."

My mother stepped toward the speaker.

"Show yourself."

The voice ignored her.

"Daniel, Mara chose you because she believed you would always choose your son."

"She was right."

"Even over everyone else."

"Yes."

The answer came easily.

Too easily.

My mother looked at me.

I didn't apologize.

The speaker clicked.

"That is why she failed."

The door unlocked.

I stared at it.

"You can leave."

"That's it?"

"For now."

"Why bring me here?"

"Because after tonight, you cannot claim ignorance."

I grabbed Mara's recorder, the file, and several sealed resonator packets.

My mother took photographs of every screen.

Before we reached the door, the man's voice stopped us.

"Daniel."

I turned.

"When the headaches become continuous, you will reconsider."

I hated that he sounded certain.

We left.

Outside, daylight felt unreal.

I called Elena before reaching the car.

"How is he?"

"Awake."

"Headache?"

"Yes."

"Continuous?"

A pause.

"Pretty much."

The words hit like a punch.

"I'm coming."

My mother drove.

I sat in the passenger seat replaying Mara's recording.

There was more after the section I had heard.

Several minutes of static.

Then Mara again.

"If Calder contacts you, they will tell you the cascade can only be stopped by recovering his original memory."

I sat upright.

She had anticipated them.

"They are telling the truth."

My mother's hands tightened on the wheel.

The recording continued.

"But they will not tell you what caused the cascade."

Static.

Then:

"We did."

I closed my eyes.

"Calder created the technology."

Mara's voice shook.

"The cascade begins when the system becomes self-sustaining across multiple temporal branches. Every correction makes it worse."

The irony was unbearable.

They had repeatedly changed time to prevent a disaster caused by changing time.

"Why keep correcting?" my mother asked.

I held up a hand.

Mara answered.

"Because once the first correction was made, undoing the system meant restoring the original sequence."

The original sequence in which I died.

My throat tightened.

"And I couldn't do it."

Her voice broke.

"I could save Daniel or stop the cascade. I kept choosing Daniel."

For years I had believed Mara abandoned us.

Instead she had apparently destroyed reality thirty-two times because she refused to let me die.

I did not know whether to love her or hate her.

Maybe both.

The recording continued.

"Our son eventually understood what I'd done."

A long pause.

"He chose differently."

The device clicked.

"He chose everyone else."

I stared through the windshield.

"What does that mean?"

The answer waited later in the recording.

At the clinic, Elena met us downstairs.

My son lay in a darkened examination room.

A cold pack rested behind his neck.

When he saw me, relief crossed his face.

Then anger.

"You went."

"I had to."

"I told you not to open the red door."

"I know."

"Why don't adults listen?"

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

Instead I sat beside him.

"I'm sorry."

His headache had intensified throughout the day.

Bright lights bothered him.

Sounds felt too sharp.

Elena had repeated neurological tests.

Still normal.

But the scan showed a change.

The device was no longer dormant-looking.

A faint field now surrounded it.

"That's impossible," Elena said.

"Apparently we've crossed that line."

I showed her the Calder documents.

Not everything.

Enough.

Her expression shifted from skepticism to horror.

She examined the resonator packets.

"These are supposed to go in his teeth?"

"Apparently."

"Do not put unknown technology in your child's mouth."

"Wasn't planning to."

My son opened his eyes.

"They're already there."

We all looked at him.

"What?" I asked.

He touched his molars.

"Two."

"Yes."

"There should be four."

My heart stopped.

"How do you know?"

He looked frightened.

"I remember."

"From where?"

"The room."

"What room?"

"Calder."

I felt Elena move closer.

"You've never been there in this life."

He whispered, "I have in another one."

The words were terrible because he said them like a child admitting he'd broken something.

"Tell me what you remember."

He closed his eyes.

"I'm older."

"How old?"

"I don't know."

"Are you with Mom?"

His face tightened.

"No."

"With me?"

Tears leaked from the corners of his eyes.

"No."

I gripped the edge of the chair.

"Am I dead?"

He nodded.

The confirmation hurt more than I expected.

"How?"

"I don't want to say."

"You don't have to."

Elena interrupted gently.

"Does remembering make the headache worse?"

"Yes."

"Then stop."

"I can't."

He pressed both hands against his head.

Images seemed to arrive behind his eyes faster than he could manage.

"I remember Grandma's funeral."

My mother made a small sound.

"I remember a house we don't have."

He began crying.

"I remember Dad teaching me to drive."

Then:

"I remember Dad dying before he teaches me."

I took his hand.

"Look at me."

He couldn't.

"I remember Mom coming back."

My breath caught.

"When?"

"Too late."

"Too late for what?"

He gasped.

The monitor beside him flickered.

Elena glanced toward it.

The clock changed.

3:18:44.

Then 3:18:31.

Thirteen seconds backward.

My son screamed.

Every electronic device in the room went dark.

For several seconds, there was absolute silence.

Then emergency power returned.

He lay still.

I leaned over him.

"Buddy?"

His eyes opened.

But the expression in them was not my ten-year-old son's.

It was older.

Infinitely tired.

"Dad?"

"I'm here."

He stared at my face.

Then touched my cheek.

"No scar."

My future self had a scar.

My throat tightened.

"What do you remember?"

He sat up slowly.

"Too much."

Elena reached for him.

He recoiled.

"No tests."

"Okay."

He looked toward my mother.

"Grandma."

She began crying.

He hugged her.

Not like a child.

Like someone who hadn't seen her in years.

When he released her, he looked at me.

"We don't have much time."

"Until your birthday?"

He shook his head.

"Until they find us."

"Calder?"

"No."

The word barely left his mouth.

"Who?"

He looked at the window.

"The ones Calder was hiding from."

A shadow moved outside.

Elena turned.

Nothing stood there.

My son grabbed my wrist.

"Take the recorder."

"I have it."

"Not Mom's."

I froze.

"Whose?"

"Yours."

He reached into the pocket of his hoodie.

There was no reason anything should have been there.

I had watched him change into clinic clothes earlier.

Yet he removed a small black recorder.

Old.

Scratched.

A strip of tape across it read:

FOR MYSELF — BEFORE OCTOBER 3.

My handwriting.

I pressed play.

My own voice came through.

Older.

Exhausted.

"Daniel, if you're hearing this, your son remembered early."

I stared at him.

The recording continued.

"That means the sequence has accelerated."

Static.

"You have less than forty-eight hours."

My mother whispered, "Until what?"

My recorded voice answered.

"Until you have to decide whether to let him remember the truth—or make him forget everything, including you."

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: My Future Self Left
