I bought groceries with coupons. I wore the same winter coat. I continued depositing my modest pension into the same account.

At Graham's house, life went on exactly as before.

Paige left lists on the refrigerator.

Graham called from work when he needed something collected.

Owen occasionally remembered to thank me.

Chloe sometimes sat on my bed and told me things she apparently couldn't tell her mother.

Those moments with the children mattered.

They were one reason I didn't simply pack a suitcase the day the money arrived.

Another reason was harder to admit.

I still loved my son.

Money can remove dependence quickly. It cannot erase forty-five years of motherhood.

I remembered Graham at six, refusing to attend school unless I walked him to the classroom door. I remembered him at seventeen pretending not to cry when his first girlfriend left him. I remembered Thomas straightening Graham's tie before his wedding to Paige.

Those memories existed beside the man who now sighed when his wife called me a responsibility.

Both versions were real.

That made everything complicated.

One afternoon in March, Martin telephoned.

“I may have found something interesting.”

“What?”

“The owner of your son's rental property is considering selling.”

I lowered the basket of laundry I had been folding.

Graham and Paige had rented their house for several years. The owner was elderly and lived in Florida. A management company handled most matters.

“Why are you telling me?”

“Because you asked me to identify conservative investments involving property. This one happens to have an unusual advantage.”

“My family already lives there.”

“Exactly.”

I should have dismissed the idea.

Instead, I asked for the details.

The property was sound. The neighborhood was stable. The numbers made sense even without Graham's involvement.

More importantly, purchasing it would mean that if the owner eventually sold to someone less patient, my grandchildren would not suddenly lose their home.

That was how I justified it.

Perhaps part of me was still doing what I had always done: protecting everybody quietly and asking for nothing in return.

We bought the house through a company.

Martin asked what I wanted to call it.

I thought immediately of Thomas.

Years earlier, he had operated a small outdoor-supply business called T&E Outdoor Supply.

Thomas and Evelyn.

“T&E Property Holdings,” I said.

Martin smiled. “Sentimental.”

“Only slightly.”

The sale went through in April.

Graham mentioned it during dinner.

“Apparently our landlord sold the place.”

I kept cutting my chicken.

“Is that a problem?”

“Probably not. Some company bought it.”

Paige looked irritated. “T&E something.”

“Property Holdings,” Graham said. “Sounds like investors.”

Those initials had appeared on boxes throughout Graham's childhood.

He didn't recognize them.

I passed him the potatoes.

“What happens to your lease?”

“Nothing for now.”

“That's good.”

And that was the entire conversation.

I had become the owner of the house in which my son believed I was fortunate to be allowed a bedroom.

The irony was almost too sharp to enjoy.

But I didn't buy the property to trap him.

I bought it because I was still behaving like his mother.

My second purchase was different.

That one was entirely for me.

My sister Ruth lived outside Wilmington. We had always been close, although distance and Thomas's illness had reduced our visits during his final years.

Ruth knew nothing about the lottery at first.

I simply asked whether she would spend an afternoon looking at houses with me.

She stared at me over lunch.

“Are you leaving Graham?”

“I don't know.”

“That means yes.”

“It means I'm looking.”

She studied me for several seconds.

Then she smiled.

“Good.”

We saw four houses that afternoon.

The first was too large. The second smelled of damp wood. The third had been renovated so thoroughly that it felt like a hotel.

The fourth was a cottage fifteen minutes from Ruth.

It had two bedrooms, a broad porch, mature roses along the fence, and an old oak tree leaning over the back garden.

The kitchen was pale yellow.

I stood inside that kitchen longer than anywhere else.

Thomas had once promised me that when we retired, he would paint our kitchen yellow because I had always wanted one.

His illness came first.

The yellow kitchen never did.

Ruth found me standing beside the window.

“You've gone quiet.”

“I like this place.”

“You've said that about nothing else today.”

I touched the counter.

“I can imagine waking up here.”

Ruth looked around.

“Then perhaps you should.”

I bought it in June.

Only Ruth, Martin, and the necessary professionals knew.

I furnished it gradually.

A comfortable blue sofa.

An oak dining table.

Bookshelves.

A reading chair beside the brightest window.

I put one photograph of Thomas on the refrigerator.

Every few weeks, I visited alone.

Sometimes I sat on the porch for an hour doing absolutely nothing.

Nobody called my name.

Nobody asked what was for dinner.

Nobody left towels for me to fold.

The silence wasn't lonely.

That surprised me.

It felt spacious.

Still, each evening I returned to Graham's house.

I wasn't ready to leave without understanding whether my family still wanted me or merely wanted what I did for them.

The answer arrived in November.

We were eating dinner when Graham placed his fork beside his plate.

“Mom, Paige and I want to discuss something.”

Paige immediately smiled.

It was the careful smile people use before presenting a decision they have already made.

“We found something we think you'll really like,” she said.

Graham reached toward the empty chair beside him and produced a glossy brochure.

He slid it across the table.

Pine Harbor Senior Living.

The cover showed a silver-haired couple walking beside a landscaped pond.

I didn't touch it.

“You've been looking at retirement communities?”

Paige nodded enthusiastically.

“This one is wonderful.
