I asked.

Rachel laughed.

"Everything."

"Meaning?"

"That I was punishing her for caring about me."

Nick closed his eyes.

"Sounds right."

"That parents are supposed to help their children."

"Also sounds right."

"That I was being dramatic."

"Definitely sounds right."

Rachel glared.

"Are you enjoying this?"

"A little."

She took a sip of coffee.

"Then she cried."

Nick's humor disappeared.

"And?"

"And I almost let her keep doing it."

No one spoke.

Rachel stared into her mug.

"I almost said, fine, forget it."

She looked at me.

"Because the second she started crying, every part of me wanted the conversation over."

There it was.

The family mechanism.

Not just Linda rescuing Rachel.

Rachel rescuing Linda from discomfort too.

"I think we all do it," Nick said.

Rachel nodded.

"But I didn't."

"What did you say?"

She gave a tired smile.

"I told her I loved her and transferred the money anyway."

Nick laughed softly.

"How'd that go?"

"She hung up."

"Progress."

"That's what I told myself."

Rachel became serious.

"Dad called after."

"What did he say?"

"He apologized."

Nick straightened.

"For what?"

"For letting Mom keep doing it."

Rachel looked down.

"He knew she gave me money sometimes."

"But not this?"

"Not the amount."

She traced the rim of the cup.

"He said he thinks they've spent years using money to keep me close."

Nick frowned.

"That's a big statement."

"I know."

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

"He said every time I got into trouble, they fixed something."

She counted lightly on her fingers.

"Credit-card balance. Car repair. Rent twice. The restaurant."

I hadn't known most of that.

Neither, apparently, had Nick.

Rachel saw our faces.

"Exactly."

Nick leaned forward.

"You never told me."

"I was embarrassed."

I resisted pointing out the irony.

She caught it anyway.

"Yes, yes. Apparently I've been embarrassed for fifteen years."

"That sounds exhausting."

"It is."

She took another drink.

"Dad said he and Mom need to talk about it."

Nick nodded.

"Probably."

"And I told him I'm not taking money from them for a while."

That surprised us both.

"At all?" Nick asked.

"Unless there's a real emergency."

"Define real."

Rachel gave him a look.

"Hospital. House fire. Kidnapping."

"No car tires?"

"No."

"Broken dishwasher?"

"No."

"Unexpected casserole dish theft?"

She almost smiled.

"Shut up."

Then she looked at me.

"I returned your actual casserole dish."

"You found it?"

"It was under my oven."

I stared.

"How?"

"I don't know."

"How does a casserole dish get under an oven?"

"I have children."

That explanation was somehow sufficient.

We laughed.

The conversation lasted another hour.

Before Rachel left, she took an envelope from her purse.

"What is that?"

"Nothing dramatic."

She placed it on the table.

I opened it.

Inside was a check.

I looked at the amount.

It was larger than the television balance had been.

"Rachel."

"I know."

"What is this?"

"The difference."

"Between what?"

"The insurance covered some of the television."

"Yes."

"You paid the rest."

"Yes."

She nodded toward the check.

"That's for the protection-plan deductible, the technician visit, and the wall remount."

I stared at her.

"We never asked you for those."

"I know."

"Then why are you paying them?"

"Because they happened because of what I did."

Nick looked at the check.

"Rachel, this is too much."

"No."

"Seriously."

"No."

I studied her.

The earlier payments had become tangled with pride, guilt, rescue and obligation.

This felt different.

"Can you afford it?"

She hesitated.

"Yes."

"Without selling anything?"

"Yes."

"Without your mother reimbursing you?"

A reluctant smile appeared.

"Yes."

I nodded.

Then I tore the check in half.

Rachel stared at me.

"What the hell?"

Nick laughed.

I tore it again.

Rachel looked genuinely offended.

"I just wrote that."

"I know."

"Checks aren't free."

"They cost twelve cents."

"That's not the point."

I dropped the pieces on the table.

"You already paid what we agreed."

"But—"

"No."

Her expression darkened.

"Candace."

"This is the other side of the lesson."

"What lesson?"

"Accountability doesn't mean endless punishment."

She stopped.

"You owed us the remaining television cost."

"Yes."

"You paid it."

"Yes."

"You apologized."

"Yes."

"You talked to the boys."

"Yes."

"You changed your behavior."

She didn't answer.

"At some point, Rachel, if I keep collecting from you because you feel guilty, then I'm not teaching you accountability."

I pushed the torn check toward her.

"I'm teaching you that mistakes can never be finished."

Her eyes lowered.

Nick remained silent.

Rachel picked up one piece of the check.

"You really don't want this?"

"No."

"You're not going to bring this up again in six months?"

"No."

"At Christmas?"

"No."

"When I annoy you?"

"Tempting, but no."

A small smile appeared.

"So we're done?"

I considered the question.

"With the money?"

"Yes."

"Yes."

She nodded.

Then she asked the harder question.

"With the whole thing?"

I looked at her.

"No."

Her smile disappeared.

"But not the way you mean."

I leaned back.

"The television is finished."

She waited.

"What happened between us changed things."

"I know."

"I don't want to go back to what we had before."

Rachel looked hurt.

I continued.

"Because what we had before wasn't as good as we thought."

Her expression softened.

"We were polite."

"We were careful."

"You were careful."

"Mostly."

She nodded.

"And you were mean sometimes."

"Mostly."

I laughed.

Rachel looked embarrassed.

"I don't want that either."

"Good."

"So what do you want?"

"Something new."

The answer came before I'd planned it.

She stared at me.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning you ask before assuming."

"Okay."

"I say something when I'm irritated instead of storing it for five years."

"That sounds terrifying."

"It probably will be."

She smiled.

"What else?"

"You stop treating my life like evidence that yours is failing."

Her smile disappeared.

"That's fair."

"And I stop treating you like a problem Nick brought into the marriage."

She blinked.

I hadn't realized how true that was until I said it.

Rachel looked away.

"Also fair."

Nick stared at both of us.

"Should I leave?"

"Yes," we said together.

He raised his hands.

"Great."

He walked outside.

Rachel laughed.

Then she became serious.

"I've spent years thinking you looked down on me."

"I've spent years thinking you resented me."

"I did."

"I know."

"Did you look down on me?"

I considered.

"Sometimes."

She nodded.

"Thanks for lying."

"You asked."

"I know."

"And sometimes you deserved it."

"There she is."

We both laughed again.

When Rachel left, she gathered the torn check.

At the door, she turned.

"Sam wants to come over next weekend."

"Fine."

"Wyatt too."

"I assumed."

"They want to sleep over."

I stared at her.

"Absolutely not."

She grinned.

"I told them you'd say that."

"Maybe eventually."

Her expression changed.

"Really?"

"Maybe."

That one word meant more to her than I expected.

She nodded.

"Okay."

Then she left.

A week later, the boys came over again.

No disaster.

No broken electronics.

No dramatic lesson.

We made pizza.

Sam carefully asked before using the rolling pin.

Wyatt tried to feed cheese to the dog next door through the fence and was stopped before success.

Nick showed them how to use a tape measure.

Rachel stayed for dinner.

At one point, Wyatt pulled the small soccer ball from his backpack.

The room went quiet.

Not intentionally.

It simply happened.

Rachel saw it.

So did Sam.

Wyatt looked confused.

"Can we play?"

Before anyone answered, Sam took the ball from him.

"Outside."

Wyatt frowned.

"Why?"

"Because balls don't go in the house."

He carried it toward the back door.

Rachel looked at me.

I looked at her.

Nothing needed to be said.

That night, after they left, I found something on the coffee table.

A folded sheet of paper.

Sam's handwriting covered the front.

FOR AUNT CANDACE.

Inside was a drawing of our living room.

The television was on the wall.

Four stick figures stood beneath it.

Me.

Nick.

Sam.

Wyatt.

Rachel was drawn near the doorway.

Above everyone, in crooked block letters, Sam had written:

WE ASK FIRST NOW.

I sat on the couch holding the paper.

Nick read it over my shoulder.

"Frame it."

I laughed.

"Seriously?"

"Absolutely."

So I did.

Not beside the television.

That would have been too obvious.

I put it in the hallway where family photographs hung.

Two days later, Rachel saw it.

She stopped walking.

For nearly a minute, she stood in front of the frame.

Then she turned toward me.

"You kept this?"

"Of course."

Her eyes filled.

She looked back at Sam's drawing.

"I think that's the first time I've seen something about the whole situation and not wanted to crawl into a hole."

"Good."

Rachel wiped one eye.

Then her expression shifted.

"I need to tell you something."

The seriousness in her voice made me straighten.

"What?"

She looked toward Nick, who was helping the boys outside.

"I talked to Mom and Dad again."

"Okay."

"And I made a decision."

"What decision?"

Rachel took one slow breath.

"I'm done letting them fix my life every time I make it uncomfortable."

I waited.

"And there's something I've been hiding from everyone because I knew Mom would rescue me if she found out."

The room seemed to grow quieter.

"What?"

Rachel looked down.

For the first time in months, the fear on her face had nothing to do with the television.

"I have debt."

"How much?"

She swallowed.

"A lot."

I didn't ask the next question.

She answered it anyway.

"More than you think."

Then she looked at me.

"And this time, I'm going to fix it myself."

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Rachel Finally Showed Me the Number She Had Hidden for Years, and
