Christmas.

Rebecca’s funeral photograph on the bookshelf.

Dad helping us paint.

Mom bringing takeout.

Daniel carrying me over the threshold because I laughed and told him he was ridiculous.

My marriage had started here.

So had another layer of secrets.

Laura arrived with Holt twenty minutes later.

She handed me Dad’s old key.

It fit the front door.

“First door,” I said.

Rebecca looked around.

“What’s the second?”

I remembered something.

Our bedroom closet had always stuck.

Dad fixed it once.

Except he had spent nearly three hours doing it.

At the time, we teased him.

I walked there.

The closet door opened easily now.

The back wall looked ordinary.

Daniel touched the trim.

“This was replaced.”

“When?”

“Before we moved out.”

“By Dad?”

“Yes.”

I ran my fingers along the frame.

Laura’s key had a second, smaller tooth near its base.

Not needed for the front lock.

I looked for a keyhole.

Found one beneath the lower trim.

The wall released with a soft click.

Rebecca whispered, “My God.”

A narrow panel opened.

Inside was a fireproof case.

No lock.

I lifted it out.

Everyone gathered around.

The master trust instrument lay on top.

Original signatures.

Robert Bennett.

Richard Vale.

Eleanor Bennett.

A notary.

Thirty-one percent ownership assigned to the Claire Bennett Irrevocable Trust.

But beneath it was something else.

A ledger.

Hundreds of transactions.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

At the back was a recent page.

Not seventeen years old.

Not six.

Recent.

Three weeks earlier.

A payment from a Mercer Security account.

Recipient:

DANIEL REEVES.

My husband.

Amount:

$250,000.

Description:

REACTIVATION.

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

He stared at the page.

Rebecca stepped between us.

Richard reached inside his coat.

Mom whispered, “Daniel?”

I held up the ledger.

“You were paid three weeks ago.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.”

Every remaining piece of trust inside me cracked.

“For what?”

He swallowed.

“To
