knowing what the money was.”

“Yes.”

“That means what?”

“It may mean you have a marital interest in the property even though your name was never on the deed.”

Daniel stopped pacing.

Emily looked at me.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“So Michael wasn’t guessing.”

“No.”

“He needs me.”

“He may.”

I looked at Emily.

Her father’s house.

Her inheritance.

Her connection to the man she never knew.

And legally, some portion might belong to me.

A woman she had met two days earlier.

“What did Thomas want me to do?”

Caroline’s answer came gently.

“He refused to decide that for you.”

For once.

“He left instructions for Daniel and Emily.”

“Yes.”

“For Robert.”

“Yes.”

“For Helen.”

“Yes.”

“But not me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he said he had already made too many choices on your behalf.”

That silenced me.

Caroline continued.

“He wanted you to know the full truth before deciding whether to assert your rights.”

“What full truth?”

A pause.

“Ruth, the blue house wasn’t the only property Thomas kept secret.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Daniel heard.

“What did she say?”

I raised one hand.

Caroline continued.

“There is a second asset.”

“What?”

“A parcel adjacent to the house.”

“How large?”

“Just under two acres.”

“Owned by whom?”

“Thomas.”

Emily frowned.

“The lot behind the house?”

Maryanne looked startled.

“What lot?”

Emily turned to her.

“The wooded one.”

Caroline said, “That land is the real reason Michael needs the property.”

I closed my eyes.

Not the bungalow.

Not sentiment.

Not even the street frontage.

Two acres.

“Why didn’t Robert mention it?”

“He may not know.”

“Maryanne doesn’t.”

“Thomas purchased it quietly twenty-six years ago.”

“For what?”

Caroline took a breath.

“He intended to build something there for Emily.”

The room went still.

“What?”

“He called it the Bennett-Cole House.”

Emily whispered, “What is that?”

Caroline answered.

“A home for young mothers who need temporary housing while finishing school.”

Emily sat down hard.

Maryanne began crying.

Thomas had not only kept the blue house.

He had spent twenty-six years quietly assembling land behind it.

The plan had never been completed.

But the property existed.

The trust existed.

And Michael’s development required both.

Caroline’s final words changed the decision ahead of us.

“If you assert your marital claim, Ruth, you could control enough of the land to stop Michael permanently.”

I looked at Emily.

Or sell it.

For millions.

Thomas had finally left the choice where it should have been all along.

With me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Thomas’s Hidden Land Forced Me to Choose Between a Fortune and His
