sure?”

“Yes.”

Maryanne began crying again.

I almost smiled.

“We really need a moratorium on crying.”

Daniel laughed.

Even Robert did.

The moment lasted only seconds.

Then Caroline interrupted.

“There’s another reason open bidding may be useful.”

“What?”

“If Michael’s project truly requires that parcel, competition exposes its actual strategic value.”

“Good.”

“But expect him to fight.”

“How?”

“He may challenge the deed restriction, zoning, access, even Thomas’s title history.”

Robert said, “Let him.”

Caroline continued.

“And there is one more thing.”

My stomach tightened automatically.

“What now?”

“Helen found a document among Samuel Bennett’s original records.”

Robert went pale.

“What document?”

“A letter Samuel wrote shortly before he died.”

“To whom?”

“Thomas.”

Robert sat.

“What does it say?”

Caroline’s voice softened.

“Samuel admitted the blue house never should have been part of the company dispute.”

Robert closed his eyes.

“And?”

“He admitted Thomas had been right.”

The room went still.

Thomas had spent decades carrying his father’s accusation that he abandoned his family for a house.

Samuel had eventually admitted the opposite.

“Did Thomas ever see the letter?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

Daniel stared.

“Why didn’t Dad show Robert?”

Robert answered before Caroline could.

“Because Thomas knew I didn’t need our father’s permission to apologize.”

His eyes filled.

“He was waiting for me to do it myself.”

The old brothers’ war suddenly looked even sadder.

Pride layered over injury until decades disappeared.

Caroline said she would send the letter.

When it arrived, Robert read it alone.

Then he folded it and placed it in his coat.

No one asked what he intended to do.

He stood.

“I’m going to talk to Michael.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because my son inherited my version of Thomas.”

Robert looked at the documents surrounding us.

“I taught him that the blue house was where our family lost everything.”

His mouth tightened.

“I need to tell him it was actually where Thomas refused to lose one more thing.”

He walked toward the door.

I followed.

“Robert.”

He turned.

“Michael may not care.”

“I know.”

“Money changes people.”

Robert gave me a tired smile.

“So does the truth.”

Then he left.

That night, Michael withdrew his settlement offer.

Not the lawsuit.

Only the money.

At 11:16 p.m., Caroline forwarded the notice.

North Shore Redevelopment would pursue all available legal remedies.

Daniel read it.

Emily read it.

Neither looked frightened.

For the first time since Thomas died, neither did I.

Michael had expected secrecy to divide us.

Instead, every revelation had made the decision clearer.

The blue house would stay.

The rear land would be sold only on our terms.

Thomas’s unfinished project would no longer belong to his guilt.

It would belong to the people still alive.

And if Michael wanted to stop us, he would finally have to do what Thomas had avoided for most of his life.

Stand in the open and explain himself.
