stopped.

Daniel looked down.

Emily did too.

I continued.

Thomas wrote about Maryanne.

Emily.

The house.

The money.

The land.

He did not excuse himself.

He admitted he had delayed because every year made confession harder.

He wrote that when Daniel was little, he feared telling me would destabilize our family.

When Daniel grew older, he feared damaging our son’s view of him.

When we retired, he feared changing the peaceful life we had finally reached.

Cancer had stripped those excuses down to what they were.

Fear.

Near the end, Thomas wrote about me.

He said the worst part of secrecy was not that he had weeks, that had been the injury I could not name.

Not Maryanne.

Not money.

Choice.

Thomas had loved me.

I believed that.

But he had edited himself marriage could contain both devotion and failure.

That was less comforting than a simple story.

It was also more true.

The next morning, Michael withdrew the lawsuit.

North Shore relinquished its pending challenge.

Within a week, deed restrictions affecting the charitable use were formally waived by the entities he controlled.

Caroline called it “the legal equivalent of a miracle.”

I called it paperwork.

Thomas would have appreciated that.

Then came the question we
