state.”

“Then prove it.”

The words came out before I could stop them.

They were his words.

Brian recognized them.

His face changed.

For an instant, he looked ashamed.

Then Patricia appeared at the end of the corridor.

She walked toward us quickly.

“What reasonable.

Perfectly reasonable.

And I did not believe it.

Patricia touched Brian’s arm.

“Come on.”

He let her lead him away.

Daniel was standing several feet behind me.

“You caught that too?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Enough to matter?”

“Not yet.”

He adjusted the folder beneath his arm.

“But I’m becoming very interested in your mother-in-law.”

We spent the following weeks reconstructing my life around the withdrawal dates.

The details were almost insulting in their precision.

The first withdrawal happened while Brian was supposedly in North Dakota and I was finishing an overnight hospital shift.

The second occurred while I was working another twelve-hour shift.

The third happened during a mandatory training day.

The fourth fell on my migraine day at home.

Whoever had chosen the dates knew my schedule.

Daniel obtained a list of people who could access the nursing calendar.

Nothing led anywhere.

Then I remembered something.

Patricia routinely asked for my schedule.

She claimed she needed to know when Brian and I were free for family dinners.

Sometimes she kept a handwritten copy on her refrigerator.

When I told Daniel, he did not react dramatically.

He simply wrote it down.

A few days later, he called me.

“I found something else.”

“What?”

“Your credit report shows an identity verification inquiry around the time your license so.”

“I think somebody was preparing.”

That afternoon, I went home and opened the small fireproof box where Brian and I kept passports, birth certificates, insurance driver’s license we normally kept with the insurance documents was gone.

So was an old pay stub showing my employee identification number.

I sat on the bedroom floor.

There was no dramatic realization.

No sudden answer.

Only a slow, nauseating understanding.

Somebody had not merely stolen an opportunity.

They had studied me.

My signature.

My schedule.

My jewelry.

My documents.

My marriage.

That evening, Daniel called again.

His voice sounded different.

More guarded.

“We got the bank’s internal notes from Mrs. Wilkes’s transactions.”

“And?”

“She wrote something on the name.

Brian’s birthday.

The amount of our mortgage payment.

Questions only someone close to me should have known.

Daniel let the silence sit for a moment.

Then he said, “Angela, whoever did this didn’t learn you from a stolen wallet.”

He paused.

“They learned you from inside your
