treated Victor’s words as manipulation, but one fact remained useful.

Victor believed the ledger could prove the structure of the scheme.

That meant recovering it mattered not only for Thomas Brooks’s old crimes, but for mine.

Ethan was still too fragile for aggressive questioning.

The detectives asked us to help with memory cues instead.

Harold described places Thomas had built.

Brian did the same.

A fishing dock at his childhood home.

A boathouse with blue doors.

An equipment shed the water.

It was too large to be a shed and too small to be a cabin.

I remembered asking Patricia about it.

She said Thomas had built it for Brian when he was afternoon.

Unlike the Mill Creek cabin, the lake property looked cheerful.

Wide porch.

Clean windows.

Water sparkling beyond maple trees.

It was difficult to imagine any secret surviving there.

The playhouse remained.

The siding had been repainted gray.

The door was now blue.

But beneath peeling paint near the hinge, a strip of red showed through.

Brian touched it.

“This is it.”

Alvarez stopped him before he entered.

Crime-scene officers photographed the interior.

The playhouse smelled of damp wood and old lake water.

Most of the original furniture was gone.

A built-in bench remained along the back wall.

Brian stared at it.

“My dad built that.”

Water.

Red door.

Something Thomas built.

The bench was inspected.

At first, nothing.

Then an officer noticed one plank had newer screws than the others.

They removed it.

Inside the hollow space beneath the seat was a plastic freezer bag.

Harold whispered, “Please.”

The detective pulled it out.

Inside was a notebook.

Black cover.

Elastic band.

Thomas Brooks’s initials written in silver ink.

T.B.

Brian sat down on the playhouse floor.

For a moment, he looked like a boy in the place his father had made for him.

Alvarez opened the notebook only after it was photographed.

The pages were filled with dates, initials, addresses, amounts, license numbers, and short descriptions.

Some entries were fifteen years old.

Some older.

Daniel scanned a few.

“This is enough to reopen cases.”

Alvarez nodded.

Then he found the recent additions.

Different handwriting.

Patricia’s.

She had used Thomas’s old ledger after his death.

At first, she documented Victor’s renewed it:

ring.

schedule.

signature samples.

Brian made a broken sound.

I kept reading.

There were four withdrawal amounts.

After each was a
