a small dog.

He looked thin.

But he was smiling.

I stared at that photograph longer than I expected.

A child had survived because adults failed him repeatedly and, somehow, he kept enough of himself intact to remember a red door.

The ledger he hid had exposed nearly everyone.

Yet one question still remained.

Thomas had surrendered.

Martin was in custody.

Victor was in custody.

Patricia was in custody.

The money had largely been traced.

Dad’s death was being prosecuted.

The frame against me had collapsed.

But Daniel called one evening with a problem.

“Remember the fourth withdrawal?”

“Yes.”

“Sixteen thousand.”

“Yes.”

“Patricia’s notes say it went to Victor.”

“I know.”

“It didn’t.”

I sat up.

“What?”

“The serial-number records from the bank don’t match the cash recovered from Victor.”

“Then where did it go?”

“That’s what investigators asked Melissa.”

“And?”

“She says she handed it to Patricia.”

I felt the old cold sensation return.

“Patricia said she gave it to Victor.”

“She lied.”

“Why?”

Daniel paused.

“Because apparently she used that final sixteen thousand for something else.”

“What?”

“To pay someone.”

“Who?”

“Thomas.”

I stood.

“That makes no sense.”

“Thomas denies receiving it.”

“Then who?”

Daniel was quiet.

“Angela, the payment was delivered to a man using Thomas’s old alias.”

Thomas Bell.

“But Thomas says it wasn’t him?”

“Correct.”

I thought of duplicate licenses.

False identities.

Dead men living.

Living men buried.

A family that had survived for decades by making one person look like another.

“Who was pretending to be Thomas?”

Daniel answered.

“We don’t know yet.”

Then he added the part that turned the entire investigation again.

“But the man deposited part of the money into an account opened four years ago.”

“When Dad died?”

“Yes.”

“Whose account?”

Daniel took a breath.

“Your father’s.”

<a
