nothing.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

He looked directly at me.

“I started taking the money because if I refused, Arthur would send someone else.”

“That is a convenient excuse.”

“I know.”

“Did you tell him Mom was dying?”

Silence.

My chest tightened.

“Roger.”

“Yes.”

The word barely came out.

I slapped him again.

This time tears sprang into his eyes.

“You told him.”

“I thought he already knew.”

“You told him when our mother was dying.”

“I was trying to keep them away from the house.”

“By feeding them information?”

“Yes.”

I turned from him before I did something worse.

Behind me, Roger said, “I’m the reason Eduardo knew when to start moving.”

Nobody defended him.

Not even Roger.

After a long moment, Miguel asked, “Is Eduardo going to the hotel tomorrow?”

Roger wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

“Yes.”

“Arthur?”

“Yes.”

“Isabel?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the metal box filled with thirty years of proof.

Then at Dad’s cassette.

Then at my brother.

“You said Eduardo has been waiting for Mom to die.”

Roger nodded.

“Because as long as she lived, he couldn’t complete the succession without risking her challenge.”

“And now?”

“Now he has a few hours before you become the challenge.”

I closed the cashbox.

“Then we go before nine.”

Roger stared at me.

“Elena, Eduardo does not lose in public.”

I lifted Dad’s cassette.

“Neither did Mom.”

Outside, headlights appeared at the end of the street.

One vehicle.

Then another.

Roger went pale.

“Nobody followed me.”

Miguel looked toward the door.

“They followed somebody.”

Black SUVs turned into the lot.

The same kind I had seen outside Harold’s office.

Roger grabbed the metal box.

“There’s another exit.”

We moved toward the rear of the garage.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered while running.

An elderly man’s voice spoke.

Weak.

Controlled.

Almost delicate.

“Elena.”

I stopped.

Roger turned.

His face told me he recognized what I was hearing before I did.

“Who is this?”

The old man breathed once.

Then said, “I am your grandfather.”

Eduardo Aranda had finally called me himself.

<a
