“No.”

Isabel turned toward him.

It was the first time I saw the future CEO instead of the frightened daughter.

“Do not tell me what I am allowed to read.”

Arthur stopped.

I walked forward.

One of the security men shifted.

Michael moved between us.

“Touch her,” he said quietly, “and this becomes a hospital incident with fifty witnesses.”

The guard stopped.

I reached Isabel.

Up close, the resemblance to Mom hurt.

Same tiny crease between the eyebrows.

Same way of pressing her lips together when trying not to show fear.

I placed the envelope in her hands.

She traced her name.

ISABELLA MARIANA LOPEZ.

Her fingers began shaking.

“I don’t use this name.”

“She did.”

“Who?”

I swallowed.

“Mom.”

Isabel closed her eyes.

Then tore the envelope open.

Arthur turned away.

That frightened me more than if he had tried to stop her.

The first page unfolded.

Isabel read silently.

Her face changed line by line.

Halfway down the page she covered her mouth.

Roger looked at me.

“What does it say?”

“I don’t know.”

Mom had written it only for her.

Isabel read another page.

Then another.

Finally she looked at Arthur.

“You told me she left me.”

Arthur said nothing.

“You told me she chose another family.”

Still nothing.

“You told me Daniel Lopez was dangerous.”

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

“He was.”

Isabel looked at Michael.

Then me.

Then Roger.

“Who are they?”

Arthur finally answered.

“Complications.”

Isabel laughed.

A stunned, broken sound.

“These are people.”

“Yes.”

“Are they my family?”

Arthur did not answer.

That was his mistake.

Isabel turned to Roger.

“Who is your father?”

Roger’s face went pale.

“Elena—”

“No,” Isabel said. “I’m asking him.”

Roger looked at Arthur.

Then back at her.

“Arthur.”

Isabel stared.

The corridor went utterly silent.

Arthur whispered, “That is not established.”

Roger pulled the DNA report from the cashbox folder Miguel carried.

“It can be.”

Isabel stepped backward until her shoulders touched the wall.

“So he’s your son.”

Arthur said nothing.

“And Michael?”

“My brother,” I said.

“Gabriel?”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“Your sister.”

Isabel pressed both hands against her temples.

“This is insane.”

“Yes.”

“This is impossible.”

“Yes.”

“My grandfather would never—”

A voice behind Arthur interrupted.

“Never what?”

Every Aranda security guard straightened.

Arthur turned.

An old man stood at the far end of the corridor in a wheelchair.

Two aides were behind him.

I had seen him only in photographs.

Eduardo Aranda del Valle.

Ninety-three.

Thin.

Pale.

But unmistakably in control.

His eyes went first to Isabel.

Then Michael.

Then Roger.

Finally me.

When he looked at me, I understood why Mom had run.

There was nothing emotional in his face.

No shock.

No grief.

No affection.

Only calculation.

Eduardo raised one hand.

The corridor fell silent.

Then he looked at Isabel and said, “Give me Mariana’s letter.”

She held it tighter.

“No.”

Something almost like approval flickered across his face.

Then he looked at me.

“You brought Gabriel.”

Michael stepped forward.

“My name is Michael.”

Eduardo smiled faintly.

“That is what they called you.”

Michael’s face hardened.

“You know who I am.”

“I have always known.”

Isabel began crying openly now.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe he was dead?”

Eduardo’s expression did not move.

“It was necessary.”

She stared at him.

“For what?”

He looked at all four of us.

“For this family to survive.”

I finally understood the truth.

Eduardo had not come to silence us.

He had expected this meeting.

Maybe he had spent decades preparing for it.

He leaned back in his wheelchair.

“Tomorrow’s signing will proceed.”

Isabel wiped her face.

“No.”

Arthur turned.

“Isabel.”

She looked at him.

“I am not signing anything.”

Eduardo gave a quiet laugh.

“You will.”

She shook her head.

“I won’t.”

“You misunderstand.”

He folded his hands over the blanket covering his knees.

“The documents are not merely about your appointment.”

“What are they about?”

Eduardo’s gaze shifted to Michael.

Then Roger.

Then me.

“They determine which one of Mariana’s children inherits control when I die.”

Nobody spoke.

Eduardo smiled.

“And I have already chosen.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Eduardo Named the Heir He Had Chosen, but Isabel’s
