the envelope remains sealed.”

Isabel stared at him.

“You’re bargaining with my sister’s identity?”

“I am giving Elena a choice.”

“No,” I said. “You’re making the same mistake you made with Mom.”

His eyes narrowed.

“She chose suffering.”

“She chose not to let you buy permission afterward.”

I stepped closer.

“And so do I.”

Eduardo studied me.

Then placed the envelope back inside his chair.

“Seven-thirty.”

“I won’t be there.”

“You will.”

He signaled his aides.

They turned the wheelchair.

Before leaving, Eduardo looked at Isabel.

“Your announcement remains at nine.”

“I’m not coming.”

“Yes, you are.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Why are you so certain?”

Eduardo glanced toward the letter in her hand.

“Because Mariana did not tell you everything either.”

Then he was wheeled away.

Arthur followed after several seconds.

But before he left, he looked at Roger.

Something complicated passed between them.

Guilt.

Fear.

Possibly recognition.

Roger turned away first.

We remained in the corridor.

Five children.

One absent.

One dead mother.

One family empire built around documents that turned people into assets.

Isabel sat on a bench.

“I have a twin.”

Michael sat beside her.

“Yes.”

“Maybe.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“How can you say that?”

“Because Eduardo knows where she went.”

“That doesn’t mean she survived.”

“No.”

Michael’s voice softened.

“But until we know otherwise, we look.”

Isabel unfolded Mom’s letter again.

A smaller paper slipped from between the pages.

She frowned.

“I missed this.”

It was a handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

Isabel read it aloud.

“If Eduardo ever tells you that your sister died, ask him why he paid Saint Agnes every October third.”

Michael stood.

“What?”

Isabel looked up.

“Saint Agnes.”

Miguel was already searching his phone.

“There’s a Saint Agnes residential medical center outside San Marcos.”

“For children?” I asked.

“Originally.”

Michael took the note.

“October third is the twins’ birthday.”

I felt my pulse accelerate.

Mom had known something.

Maybe not everything.

But enough to leave a trail.

Isabel looked toward the elevators Eduardo had used.

“He lied.”

Roger gave a tired laugh.

“That narrows nothing down.”

“No.”

Isabel stood.

Her grief was still there.

So was fear.

But beneath both, something new had appeared.

Decision.

“We have six hours before they expect me to sign.”

She folded Mariana’s letter carefully.

“Let’s find my sister first.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: At Saint Agnes We Found Thirty-Eight Years of Hidden
