emerged.

Calm.

Controlled.

"Claire."

Everyone froze.

Evelyn Mercer.

Claire looked toward the nearest speaker.

Her face became him.

"Afraid?"

"She'll kill all of us."

The loudspeaker clicked.

"Victoria Hale."

Victoria stared upward.

"I wondered how much of your father survived in you."

Claire whispered, "She's watching cameras."

Victoria spotted one on a pipe structure.

She looked directly into it.

Evelyn's voice returned.

"You have something that belongs to me."

Victoria spoke loudly.

"Which thing?"

A pause.

Then a quiet laugh.

"Good."

Evelyn sounded almost pleased.

"Thomas always asked the wrong question first."

Victoria's jaw tightened.

"Where is my father?"

"Safe."

Claire closed her eyes at the repeated word.

Evelyn continued.

"For now."

Victoria said, "You don't have him."

"No."

"Then that threat was weak."

Another laugh.

"You assume proximity is required for power."

Victoria looked toward Claire.

"Evelyn wants us to go to the house."

Claire nodded faintly.

Evelyn seemed to hear.

"Yes."

The speaker crackled.

"Bring the page Daniel is holding."

Daniel looked down at Keene's note.

"And bring Samuel."

Price went white.

Victoria noticed.

"What does she want with Price?"

Claire answered quietly.

"Punishment."

Price whispered, "Don't give me to her."

Victoria almost smiled.

Minutes earlier he had been lecturing them about leadership.

Now he was frightened.

Evelyn spoke again.

"Come to Lake Arden before sunrise."

Victoria shouted, "Why would we?"

This time the pause was longer.

Then Evelyn said,

"Because Thomas Hale has spent twenty-one years protecting half a key."

Victoria's pulse jumped.

"And Claire Mercer has been carrying the other half since she was a child."

Claire stared at the camera.

"What?"

Evelyn's voice softened.

"Your father gave it to you, darling."

Claire's face emptied of color.

She touched the thin chain around her neck.

Victoria had seen it before but never considered it important.

A small silver pendant rested beneath Claire's shirt.

Claire slowly pulled it free.

Not jewelry.

A narrow metal cylinder.

Price stared.

"No."

Claire looked at him.

"You knew?"

"I knew Michael hid something."

Evelyn spoke through the loudspeaker.

"Now you understand."

Daniel unfolded Keene's page.

Victoria looked from the notes to the pendant.

Half a key with Thomas.

Half with Claire.

But something about Evelyn's confidence bothered her.

If Evelyn knew exactly where Claire's half was, why wait?

Because she still lacked Thomas's.

Victoria raised her voice.

"What happens if we don't come?"

Evelyn answered immediately.

"Then Samuel dies before dawn."

Price looked almost offended.

Victoria said, "That isn't much incentive for us."

Elena bit back a smile.

Evelyn remained silent for a moment.

Then:

"Daniel Cross's mother lives at 418 Ashwood Lane."

Daniel froze.

Claire whispered, "No."

Evelyn continued.

"Elena Morris has a younger brother in Boston."

Elena's face hardened.

"And Thomas Hale buys coffee every Wednesday from the same bakery, even after twenty-one years of teaching himself to vary his routines."

Victoria felt anger rise.

Names.

Families.

Patterns.

The old currency of Meridian.

Evelyn said,

"Come to Lake Arden."

The speakers went silent.

For several seconds no one spoke.

Then distant rotors became audible.

Federal response.

Price looked toward the sky.

"You can't arrest your way out of this."

Victoria stared at the dark camera.

"No."

She turned to Claire.

"But we can finally go where Evelyn doesn't want anyone else looking."

Claire held the pendant in her palm.

"The archive."

Victoria nodded.

"Before sunrise."

Elena looked at her.

"We're seriously going?"

"Yes."

"With Price?"

Victoria glanced at the handcuffed deputy director.

"Especially with Price."

He stared.

"Why?"

Victoria took Keene's page from Daniel and sealed it inside her jacket.

"Because Evelyn asked for you."

Price swallowed.

Victoria continued.

"And for the first time since this began, I'm interested in making her think she has exactly what she wants."

<a
