I could smile at a customer, mix color, answer the salon phone, sweep hair from the floor, and quietly absorb information capable of ending my marriage without anyone noticing that my pulse had changed.

Ashley made it easy.

She loved talking about Dale.

At first, I thought that was vanity. Later I understood that Dale had designed their relationship around promises, and repeating those promises made them feel real to her. The condo would be theirs. The boat would be theirs. The hidden account would be theirs. The divorce was coming. The unhappy marriage was nearly finished.

She was living in a future my husband had built out of words.

I had lived that way once too.

When Dale and I were younger, he could make a plan sound like a fact. He would stand in our tiny kitchen talking about the roofing company he wanted to build, the house we would someday own, the vacations we would take when business improved. I believed him because many of those things eventually happened.

What I had never considered was that the same gift could be used for deception.

The Thursday after Ashley mentioned the account, she arrived carrying a glossy shopping bag.

“Don’t judge me,” she said.

“I charge extra for judgment.”

She laughed.

That was another strange thing about betrayal.
