brother record?”

He did not answer.

“Did he record you?”

Still nothing.

“Were you with him the night he died?”

The line went silent.

Not disconnected.

Silent.

I could hear Dale breathing.

“Were you?”

Finally he said, “Daniel caused his own accident.”

My blood went cold.

I sat upright.

“That wasn’t my question.”

“He was angry.”

“Were you there?”

“Go back to sleep.”

“Dale.”

The call ended.

I stared at the dark screen.

My sister switched on the bedside lamp.

“What did he say?”

I told her.

At seven sharp, Agent Nolan Pierce met us at Patrice’s office.

He was in his late forties, compact, careful, and so calm that I immediately distrusted him.

Then he placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Dale’s old truck.

The one sold after Daniel died.

The passenger side was damaged.

A long scrape ran from the front panel to the rear.

Pierce placed a second photograph beside it.

Daniel’s truck after the crash.

Blue-gray paint marked one side.

“What is this?” I whispered.

“We recovered the first vehicle yesterday.”

“From Peter Sloan?”

“Yes.”

“Did you test the paint?”

“Preliminary comparison only.”

He looked directly at me.

“It is consistent.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“You’re saying Dale hit Daniel’s truck.”

“I’m saying the vehicles appear to have made contact.”

“Did that cause the crash?”

“We don’t know.”

“Was Dale there?”

“We believe so.”

I could barely breathe.

Pierce continued.

“There’s something else.”

He slid an evidence photograph toward me.

Inside Daniel’s wrecked truck, investigators had photographed a small digital recorder recovered under the passenger seat.

The original investigation had catalogued it as damaged personal property.

It had never been analyzed.

My brother had owned more than one recorder.

“The recorder from the crash still exists?” Patrice asked.

Pierce nodded.

“We located it in archived evidence yesterday.”

“Can it be recovered?”

“Our lab is working on it.”

I stared at the photograph.

“What about the marina?”

Pierce folded his hands.

“We go now.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 8:
