who killed my father?”

Margaret lowered her hands.

“I didn’t know he killed him.”

“You heard that recording.”

“Not until today.”

“But you knew they fought.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Dad threatened to report him.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Dale tried.”

I looked at the water.

“Yes.”

That was the truth I was going to have to live with.

Daniel had made mistakes.

Serious ones.

He had trusted Dale with my information.

He had hidden danger from me.

He had believed he could fix it himself.

But when it mattered, he had tried to stop what he helped begin.

Not perfectly.

Not early enough.

But he tried.

Pierce joined us several minutes later.

“Rebecca, I need your permission to have Daniel’s computer collected.”

She nodded.

“Take whatever you need.”

Then he looked at me.

“There’s another office.”

“So he planned it.”

“It appears so.”

Margaret came outside.

Her face was wet.

“He has another vehicle.”

Pierce turned.

“What?”

“A black pickup registered through Lane Coastal Management.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You never disclosed that vehicle.”

“I forgot.”

Pierce’s patience finally cracked.

“You have forgotten a remarkable number of things at precisely the wrong time.”

Margaret flinched.

I asked, “Where would he go?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t immediately called his team.

I looked back toward unit seventeen.

Daniel had warned me.

My sister had guarded his envelope.

Rebecca had preserved his boxes without knowing what they contained.

Ashley had talked too much.

Margaret had hidden too much.

Patrice had taught me to wait for facts.

And Dale had lied so often that eventually his lies had begun contradicting one another.

For the first time, I understood that his greatest weakness was not greed.

It was certainty.

He had spent decades believing he knew exactly how each of us would behave.

Daniel would stay quiet because he felt guilty.

Margaret would stay obedient because she feared prison.

Ashley would believe promises because she wanted them.

My sister would honor a dead man’s instructions.

And I would sign whatever my husband put in front of me.

He had been right rang.

Ashley.

I answered.

Her voice came fast.

“Miss C, is Dale with you?”

“No.”

“Oh God.”

“What amount—$97,000—made no sense at the time.

The account name printed above it was not Ashley’s.

Not Dale’s.

Not Margaret’s.

It was mine.

Carol Ann Harris.

I looked at Patrice.

“He isn’t going for the notebook.”

“What?”

“He’s going for the
