phrase again.

Misunderstood.

Dale had spent years treating facts as problems of interpretation.

“What does account 4418 actually do?”

He went silent.

“Dale?”

“Carol, meet me.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“Where?”

Pierce looked at me sharply.

I held his gaze.

Dale said, “The old lake cabin.”

I knew the place.

His father had owned it decades ago.

The family sold it after he died.

Or that was what Dale told me.

“Why there?”

“I need to explain everything.”

“You can explain it now.”

“Not on the phone.”

“Then explain it to the police.”

“Carol.”

His voice broke slightly.

For the first time, he sounded old.

“If they arrest me before I fix this, you’re going to lose everything too.”

There it was.

The same weapon he had used on Daniel.

Fear.

“What exactly am I going to lose?”

“The house.”

“I can survive losing a house.”

“Your retirement.”

“I’ll survive.”

“The salon.”

“You already burned it.”

He inhaled sharply.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then make me understand.”

“The holding company is yours.”

“No. You put it in my name.”

“Legally, that distinction isn’t as simple as you think.”

Patrice shook her head.

Do not engage.

I ignored Dale’s bait.

“What do you want?”

“I need you to sign one statement.”

Of course.

Even now.

Even hunted.

Even after fire and forged documents and my brother’s recording.

Dale still wanted my signature.

“What statement?”

“That you authorized the original company formation.”

Pierce stared at me.

“And if I do?”

“I can unwind the rest.”

“You mean protect yourself.”

“I mean protect us.”

“There is no us.”

Silence.

Then Dale said something that made Pierce immediately lean toward the recorder.

“Daniel understood that too late.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What did Daniel understand?”

“That sometimes you choose the smaller disaster.”

“You followed him from the marina.”

“I didn’t mean for him to crash.”

Nobody moved.

“Then what happened?”

“He cut in front of me.”

“The recording says you hit him.”

“That’s not what happened.”

“You took his phone.”

“He was confused.”

“You moved his truck.”

Silence.

“Did you push just placed himself at the crash.

Pierce wrote rapidly.

“Why didn’t you call 911?”

“I thought someone else would.”

“My brother was dying.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“You left him.”

“I panicked.”

I closed my eyes.

For eleven years, I had imagined Daniel alone in rain and darkness after an accident.

Now I knew he had not been alone.

That was worse.

“Where are you really?”

“The cabin.”

Pierce was already signaling to another agent.

I asked, “Who owns it?”

“What?”

“The cabin.
