No laptop. No stack of supporting exhibits.

One page.

I looked at it and felt my stomach tighten.

"What?"

"Tell me whether you recognize this."

She placed the page on my desk.

It was a bank authorization form from eighteen months earlier. Prescott Logistics had opened a reserve account at Commonwealth Commercial Bank, supposedly for vehicle replacement and emergency capital.

Daniel's signature appeared at the bottom.

So did mine.

Again.

I stared at the copied signature.

"We already found this account."

"No."

I looked up.

Nina pulled out the chair opposite me.

"We found an account with the same internal label."

"What's the difference?"

"The routing number."

I read the document again.

Nina tapped a series of digits.

"The reserve account we audited ends in 4418. This one ends in 9026."

"How much?"

"We don't know."

"Why don't we know?"

"Because Commonwealth won't disclose it without formal authorization, and the account isn't listed in Prescott's current books."

I leaned back.

"Who found this?"

"One of the outside auditors. It was embedded in an archived email attachment."

"Daniel?"

"The email came from Andrew."

That name had acquired a physical quality for me.

Every time I heard it, something in my shoulders tightened.

"To whom?"

"Daniel."

"Anyone else copied?"

Nina paused.

"Your father-in-law."

I looked down at the page again.

"Richard knew?"

"We know he received the email."

"That's not the same thing."

"No."

That distinction mattered.

One lesson I had learned during the investigation was that evidence became weaker the moment anger encouraged you to claim more than it proved.

"What did the email say?"

"Almost nothing. 'Final reserve authorization attached. Good to proceed Monday.'"

I looked toward the window.

Morning trucks were moving through the yard below.

"Monday for what?"

"We're still looking."

"Was money transferred?"

"We haven't confirmed it."

I rubbed the edge of the paper between two fingers.

"Why wouldn't this appear in our banking records?"

"If the account was opened under a related entity instead of Prescott Logistics itself, it might not."

"But my signature was used."

"Apparently."

"For authorization."

"Apparently."

I hated that word.

It was careful.

Responsible.

And it meant the ground beneath me had not finished shifting.

"What entity?"

"We don't know yet."

"Find out."

"I already requested expedited records."

"How long?"

"I don't know."

I looked at her.

She gave me the expression she used when she thought I was becoming unreasonable.

"Claire, legal process still exists even when you're angry."

"I'm not angry."

"That's worse."

I almost smiled.

Almost.

Nina gathered the page but I placed my hand on it.

"Leave it."

"For what?"

"I want to remember that we don't know everything yet."

She watched me for a moment.

Then she nodded.

Before leaving, she stopped at the doorway.

"There's another thing."

I looked up.

She hesitated.

"Daniel's lawyer contacted company counsel yesterday."

"About?"

"He wants access to his personal files from his former office."

"No."

"Some are legally his."

"Then counsel can review them and release whatever belongs to him."

"That's what I said."

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because Daniel specifically asked for a blue leather notebook."

I knew the notebook.

He had carried it for years.

It was not a corporate ledger. It looked more like a planner, filled with appointment times, names, shorthand notes, and numbers that made sense only to Daniel.

"Where is it?"

"Evidence storage."

"Has anyone reviewed it?"

"Not completely."

I stared at Nina.

"You've had it for weeks."

"Thousands of documents, Claire."

"I know."

"We triaged by financial relevance."

"And the notebook?"

"Looked personal."

"Until Daniel asked for it."

"Exactly."

We went downstairs together.

Prescott's former records room had been turned into temporary evidence storage. Two security cameras watched the door. Every box entering or leaving was logged.

The blue notebook was sealed inside a clear evidence bag.

I recognized the scratches on the leather cover.

Daniel had used it at breakfast sometimes, writing numbers while drinking coffee.

Once I asked what he was calculating.

He told me route profitability.

I believed him.

Nina signed the release log and carried the notebook into a small conference room.

We photographed every page before touching anything else.

Most entries meant nothing at first.

Initials.

Dates.

Dollar figures.

Names of restaurants.

Flight numbers.

Occasional arrows drawn between abbreviations.

Then we reached a page dated seventeen months earlier.

At the top, Daniel had written:

R.P. — 9026

My eyes fixed on the account number.

"R.P.?"

Nina leaned closer.

"Could be initials."

"Richard Prescott."

"Could be."

"It fits."

"Don't jump."

"I'm not."

She gave me a look.

"You're already on the other side."

I continued reading.

Underneath were four amounts.

$375,000.

$620,000.

$1,250,000.

$480,000.

Beside the last figure Daniel had written:

A.B. says hold until C.M. resolved.

C.M.

Claire Morgan.

My skin prickled.

"Nina."

"I see it."

"What was supposed to be resolved?"

"We don't know."

Another entry appeared two pages later.

Buyer wants clean cap table before diligence.

I read it twice.

"Cap table."

Nina sat back.

"Ownership."

"They were preparing the company for sale seventeen months ago."

"Possibly."

"The sale draft we found was only six months old."

"Which means negotiations may have begun much earlier."

I kept turning pages.

Daniel had not written sentences. He had written fragments, probably assuming nobody else would ever understand them.

Most were useless without context.

Some were terrifying because they needed none.

M. will handle waiver.

R.P. has not told E.

A.B. pushing faster.

C.M. issue must be solved before LOI.

I stopped.

"LOI."

"Letter of intent," Nina said.

"I know."

My voice sounded sharper than I intended.

She said nothing.

I looked at the next line.

Possible route: incapacity / abandonment / transfer presumed.

For a moment, the words did not register.

Then they did.

I read them again.

"Incapacity?"

Nina's expression had gone still.

"I don't know what it refers to."

"Me."

"We can't establish that yet."

"Whose initials are directly above it?"

"C.M."

I looked at her.

"Nina."

"I agree it's alarming."

"Alarming?"

"Yes."

"They were discussing ways to eliminate my ownership."

"It looks like they were discussing possible mechanisms."

"One of which was incapacity."

"Yes."

My hands had begun to shake.

I flattened them against the table.

"What does 'abandonment' mean in corporate ownership?"

"By itself? Nothing straightforward. A shareholder doesn't lose shares because she stops coming to the office."

"Presumed transfer?"

"Could refer to an unsigned or disputed instrument."

"A forged one?"

"Possibly."

I looked back at the notebook.

Daniel had spent years portraying me as absent from Prescott.

I had thought that story developed gradually because it flattered him.

What if it had been cultivated deliberately?

You haven't worked here in years.

You've been out of the company.

Everyone knows Daniel founded Prescott.

You've convinced yourself you're indispensable.

The anniversary dinner had felt spontaneous.

But the mythology behind it had not been.

Daniel had spent years establishing a version of reality in which I was irrelevant.

If he later produced paperwork claiming I had transferred my interest, how many people would question it?

My phone buzzed on the conference table.

Unknown number.

I nearly ignored it.

Then I answered.

"Claire Morgan."

A man's voice said, "Mrs. Morgan, my name is Thomas Weller. I'm calling regarding Richard Prescott."

I glanced at Nina.

"What about him?"

"I'm his attorney."

My posture changed.

"Go ahead."

"He would like to speak with you."

"About?"

There was a pause.

"The Commonwealth account."

I looked at Nina.

She heard enough from my expression.

"How does he know I'm aware of it?"

Another pause.

"Because the bank contacted him this morning."

Of course.

"Where?"

"He would prefer my office."

"When?"

"Today."

"Is Daniel coming?"

"No."

"Andrew?"

"No."

"Then I'll be there at eleven."

I ended the call.

Nina folded her arms.

"You're not going alone."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Good."

Thomas Weller's office occupied the nineteenth floor of a downtown building overlooking the river.

Richard Prescott was already seated when we entered.

I had never seen my father-in-law look small before.

He was seventy-one, broad-shouldered, silver-haired, and accustomed to occupying rooms as though he owned their oxygen.

That morning he kept his hands folded in his lap.

His lawyer began introductions.

Richard interrupted.

"Claire knows who I am."

I sat opposite him.

"Apparently not as well as I thought."

He winced.

For once, I felt no satisfaction.

Weller placed a recorder on the table.

"With everyone's agreement, I'd like this conversation documented."

"Fine," I said.

Richard nodded.

Nina placed her notebook beside mine.

I began.

"What is account 9026?"

Richard looked at his lawyer.

Weller nodded.

Richard exhaled.

"A reserve account."

"For what?"

"Originally? Taxes and acquisition costs."

"Whose acquisition?"

"Prescott."

"Which Prescott?"

He closed his eyes briefly.

"A holding entity Daniel established."

"Why was my signature used?"

Richard looked at me.

"I didn't know it was forged."

"Did you believe I signed it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Daniel told me you had."

"Did you ever ask me?"

"No."

"Did you ever see me sign anything?"

"No."

"Did you benefit from the account?"

His jaw tightened.

"Yes."

"How much?"

"About eight hundred thousand."

Nina made a note.

"For what?" I asked.

Richard stared at the table.

"A property investment."

"Property you own?"

"Partly."

"Using money belonging to Prescott?"

"I was told it was a distribution from Daniel's holdings."

"He didn't own enough of the company to make that distribution."

"I know that now."

The words irritated me.

"Richard, you were a businessman for forty years."

His eyes lifted.

"You knew how ownership worked."

"I knew what my son told me."

"That's not an answer."

His lawyer started to speak.

Richard raised a hand.

"No. She's right."

The room went quiet.

He leaned back.

"I didn't ask questions because I didn't want answers."

That was the first honest thing I had heard from him.

"Why?"

"Because the money was useful."

I let the silence sit between us.

Then I asked, "What does 'C.M. issue' mean?"

His face changed.

He knew immediately.

"Where did you see that?"

"Daniel's notebook."

Richard looked at Weller.

The lawyer's expression remained neutral.

"Answer if you can," he said.

Richard stared at me for several seconds.

"Daniel believed your ownership was obstructing the sale."

"I know."

"He wanted you out of the cap table."

"I know that too."

"He said you would eventually sign."

"I didn't."

"No."

"What happened when I didn't?"

Richard swallowed.

"He began asking lawyers about alternatives."

"What alternatives?"

"I wasn't part of every conversation."

"The ones you were part of."

Richard rubbed both hands over his face.

"Claire, I need you to understand something."

"I don't need to understand you. I need facts."

His eyes hardened for a second, then softened again.

"He asked whether a spouse could exercise control if the other spouse became medically unable to manage business affairs."

I did not move.

Nina did.

Her pen stopped.

"What did you say?" I asked.

"I told him I didn't know."

"Why was he asking?"

"I assumed legal planning."

"No, you didn't."

Richard said nothing.

"You knew he was trying to remove me."

"I knew he wanted control."

"Those are not the same thing."

"No."

"What was he planning?"

Richard looked toward the window.

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"You called this meeting because you knew we found the account.
