But ambition becomes dangerous when a person begins treating other people's boundaries as obstacles."

I looked down.

That sentence could have been recorded yesterday.

Dad continued.

"I have told Daniel that if my capital remains in the business after my death, Claire must receive controlling voting ownership. Not ceremonial ownership. Not temporary ownership. The consequences don't become mine because you finally dislike them."

I ended the call.

The next day, Keene provided investigators with the original digital file used to create the forged transfer.

Its metadata listed Daniel as the client.

Andrew had supplied signature samples.

Keene had drafted the transfer.

The notary seal had been copied from a property document.

Daniel's claim that I voluntarily transferred my shares effectively collapsed.

But the financial investigation still contained one unresolved question.

The attempted $3.74 million transfer to Hale Advisory Group.

Keene denied authorizing it.

Andrew denied it.

Hale denied requesting it.

Daniel, through counsel, refused to answer.

Nina traced the instruction backward.

It originated from the Commonwealth reserve account.

Authentication came through Daniel's credentials.

But the destination reference contained the acquisition escrow code.

"Could Daniel have been trying to move money out before the sale collapsed?" I asked.

"Yes."

"Why send it to Hale?"

"Maybe Hale Advisory was only a pass-through."

"To where?"

"We finally have the downstream instructions."

She placed a document before me.

If the first transfer cleared, Hale Advisory had standing instructions to forward funds within twenty-four hours.

Beneficiary:

Northstar Custodial Services.

"What's Northstar?"

"Private asset administration."

"Whose account?"

Nina turned the page.

A trust.

"Daniel's?"

"No."

"Richard?"

"No."

She pointed to the beneficiary name.

Claire Morgan Preservation Trust.

I stared.

"What?"

"You're listed as beneficiary."

"I've never heard of it."

"Established eleven months ago."

"By whom?"

"Daniel."

My stomach turned.

"Why would he move stolen money into a trust for me?"

"That's the question."

We obtained the trust instrument under subpoena.

The answer was buried on page thirty-eight.

The Claire Morgan Preservation Trust was structured to activate if I became legally incapacitated.

During incapacity, Daniel would serve as controlling trustee.

He could manage the assets.

Vote any shares transferred into the trust.

Authorize investments.

Approve medical expenses.

And exercise certain marital-property rights.

I read the clauses twice.

The medical scheme had not been designed merely to remove me from Prescott.

It would have allowed Daniel to place assets supposedly "for my benefit" under his control.

He could portray himself not as a husband stealing from an incompetent wife, but as the responsible spouse protecting her.

"That's why the account used my name," I said.

Nina nodded.

"If anyone discovered it, he could claim the money was being preserved for you."

"While he controlled it."

"Yes."

The sophistication frightened me more than the crude forgery.

Someone had planned this carefully.

"Keene?"

"Claims he drafted portions but not the final trust."

"Who did?"

"Different firm."

"Which?"

Nina handed me another page.

Barton, Pike & Rowe.

I recognized the firm.

They represented Leland Capital Partners.

The buyer.

My eyes lifted.

"Victor's lawyers created this?"

"One partner did."

"Does Victor know?"

"He says no."

"Who was the partner?"

Nina pointed.

Samuel Pike.

We had not encountered that name before.

Within hours, investigators contacted him.

His firm placed him on administrative leave.

By evening, his attorney requested a meeting.

Pike arrived the next morning carrying his own documents.

He looked furious.

Not frightened.

Furious.

"Daniel Prescott lied to me about the purpose of that trust."

I sat across from him.

"What did he tell you?"

"That his wife had early-onset cognitive problems and wanted asset protection established while she still had capacity."

"I never spoke to you."

"He said you didn't want direct contact."

"Did that not concern you?"

"It does now."

"What documentation did he give you?"

Pike opened his folder.

Medical letters.

Emails.

Financial statements.

My supposed written instructions.

All false.

Then he produced one document that made me stop.

A letter apparently written by me.

It said I feared becoming incapable like my mother.

My mother had died in a car accident at fifty-six.

She had never suffered cognitive illness.

"Did anyone verify this?" I asked.

Pike's anger shifted into shame.

"Not properly."

"Why?"

"Daniel was introduced through Victor's acquisition team. I assumed due diligence had been done."

Everyone assumed someone else had checked.

Daniel had built his fraud in the gaps between professional assumptions.

Pike continued.

"There's something else."

He removed a draft amendment.

The Preservation Trust was supposed to receive not merely cash.

It was supposed to receive my fifty-one percent of Prescott.

Upon incapacity.

Daniel would then vote the shares as trustee.

I stared at the document.

He had built multiple routes toward the same destination.

Voluntary transfer.

Forged transfer.

Incapacity.

Trust control.

If one failed, another remained.

"Was this executed?"

"No."

"Why?"

"We required your signature."

"And Daniel couldn't produce it."

"No."

I almost smiled.

Even surrounded by fraud, one unsigned page had stopped him.

Pike looked at me.

"He became extremely angry."

"When?"

"Six days before your anniversary dinner."

Six days.

The timeline tightened again.

Six days before dinner, the trust route failed.

Three days before dinner, Daniel obtained the forged transfer.

At dinner, he humiliated me publicly.

The next morning, he likely intended to move toward closing.

Instead, I restricted the accounts.

His entire plan had been hours from advancing.

I asked Pike, "What was the scheduled sale date?"

He opened his calendar.

"Preliminary closing was planned for the following Friday."

Five days after the dinner.

My skin went cold.

Five days later.

The same day Daniel sent the message:

Please. Undo what you did.

He hadn't merely been begging because the restrictions inconvenienced him.

That Friday was supposed to be closing day.

If I had obeyed him, released the accounts, and returned to silence, Daniel might have presented the forged transfer and sold Prescott before I understood what was happening.

The message suddenly carried an entirely different meaning.

Please. Undo what you did.

Not save our marriage.

Not forgive me.

Undo the financial controls.

Let the sale happen.

I looked at Nina.

She had reached the same conclusion.

For months, I had wondered whether the anniversary insult caused Daniel's downfall.

Now I understood how close the timing had been.

One cruel sentence had not created the scheme.

It had simply made me stop trusting him at exactly the moment he needed my trust most.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Five Days After the Dinner Was Supposed to Be Closing Day, and Daniel’s Plea Finally Revealed What He Needed Me to Undo

My father's image flickered slightly on the old recording.
