it.

Evelyn turned over text messages in which Dale instructed her to notarize signatures she had not witnessed.

Martin produced transfer schedules.

Lydia produced the required.

The entire scheme reduced to one habit.

Dale wanted something.

Someone else paid.

Thursday morning, mediation began.

Dale sat across a long mediator explained rules.

Confidentiality.

Good faith.

No interruptions.

I barely listened.

I watched Dale.

For twenty-six years, I had known the smallest changes in his face.

That knowledge had not disappeared because I stopped trusting him.

He was afraid.

The negotiations began with staggering.

Elaine's current tracing estimated that more than fourteen million dollars in gross transfers had moved among the entities over twelve years, though much represented repeated movement of the same underlying value rather than fourteen million in net wealth.

For once, I appreciated the distinction.

Facts did not need exaggeration.

They were bad enough.

The mediator asked what I wanted.

Everyone looked at me.

I had spent days thinking about that question.

Not revenge.

Not Dale ruined.

Not even every dollar.

“I want my name removed from debt I did not knowingly accept.”

Patrice nodded.

“I want assets that came from my company accounted asked.

“I want a divorce.”

Dale looked at me.

That was the first moment his expression truly broke.

Maybe he had expected to be the one who ended it.

Maybe even after everything, he believed the final decision belonged to him.

“Carol,” he said.

His attorney touched his arm.

He ignored him.

“You don't have to do this.”

The absurdity almost took my breath.

I looked at him.

“You planned my divorce eleven years feelings.

They struggle with spreadsheets.

The mediator called a break.

Dale followed me into the hallway before Patrice could stop him.

“Carol.”

I turned.

He stood several feet away.

No attorney.

No Sophie.

No Ashley.

Just us.

For one moment, I saw the kitchen where he had eaten crackers while preparing to meet another woman.

“Was any of it real?” I asked.

His face tightened.

“What kind of question is
