and spilled mineral water on his own cuff.

He joked that at least he had missed my dress.

He was charming.

Self-deprecating.

Easy.

I had thought chance had introduced us.

Sandra searched the foundation’s public filings and event photographs.

“There.”

She turned the laptop toward me.

An old gala repeated the story at our rehearsal dinner.

At anniversaries.

To strangers.

He called it proof that life changed in random moments.

What if nothing about it had Derek and Marlene knew each other.”

“It appears so.”

“Before he met me.”

“Yes.”

My voice sounded distant.

“Was I me.”

“No.”

“What else did you find?”

Another pause.

“A background report.”

“On around me for a moment.

I had been researched before I ever met Derek.

My assets.

My address.

My employment.

Potentially my family history.

My life reduced to information before he ever smiled at me across a crowded room.

“Who ordered it?”

“We are working to identify that.”

“But you backward.

Sandra reached for my arm.

I pulled away—not from her, but from the need to move.

I crossed the room.

The window showed towers, highways and darkening sky.

My reflection looked pale in the glass.

I remembered my first date with Derek.

He had known I preferred quiet restaurants.

He knew I had studied economics.

He knew my father had died.

I thought we were discovering things about each other.

Perhaps he had been verifying data.

I remembered how perfectly our someone handed him a file?

“What does this mean legally?” I asked.

Sandra answered carefully.

“If they deliberately approached you as part of a plan to access assets, we could be looking at a much longer fraud scheme.”

“Four years.”

“Possibly.”

“Maybe our whole long?”

“To do what?”

“Take the money.”

Sandra considered that.

“Maybe they didn’t.”

I stared at her.

She opened her laptop again.

“You said Suzanne borrowed more than twelve thousand?”

“Yes.”

“Eleanor received help too?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“Cars?”

I thought.

Derek had convinced me to help bills?”

“Yes.”

“Travel?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Maybe fifteen thousand over a few years.”

“Gifts?”

My stomach sank.

“Yes.”

“How much total?”

“I don’t know.”

Sandra looked at me.

“They may have been taking smaller amounts from the beginning.”

The idea was almost humiliating in its simplicity.

A successful fraud did not need to begin with five million dollars.

It could begin with a few thousand.

A sympathetic wife.

A family emergency.

A request framed as generosity.

Then another.

Then another.

Testing boundaries.

Learning reactions.

Normalizing access.

Until the target finally said no.

Breakfast had not created the conflict.

Breakfast had ended a pattern.

“I was an account,” I whispered.

Sandra did not contradict me.

My replacement phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

You have no idea what your father did.

I froze.

Sandra saw my face.

“What?”

I showed her.

She took the phone without touching the message.

“Don’t respond.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

She photographed the screen from her own device and forwarded the number to Alvarez.

Another message arrived.

Marlene isn’t your enemy.

My heart accelerated.

Then another.

Ask what your father stole from us before you destroy everyone.

I stared.

“Us?”

Sandra said, “Could be manipulation.”

“Could be who?”

“We don’t know.”

The phone buzzed again.

A photograph appeared.

Old.

Grainy.

My father stood beside a younger Eleanor someone had reached backward into my father’s past.

And for the first time, I wondered whether Derek had married me for money alone—or whether his family believed they were
