cursed.

“Doreen, you have no idea what Cardinal will do if you blow up their permits.”

“That sounds familiar.”

“They’ll bury you in litigation.”

“Then why are you worried?”

Silence.

“Because Dad promised me part of the money.”

“No, he didn’t.”

“You weren’t there.”

“I have his declaration.”

“You have papers Bernard helped him write when he was angry.”

“I have your recording.”

Todd stopped breathing.

“What recording?”

“The one where Harold tells you he never signed the Redwater agreement.”

Silence.

Then a whisper.

“You opened the drive.”

“Yes.”

“You shouldn’t have.”

“Why?”

“Because there are things on there that don’t belong to Dad.”

“What things?”

He hung up.

An hour later, Priya called Evelyn.

She had finished recovering deleted files from the flash drive.

There was another folder.

Todd had erased it.

Priya restored twelve documents.

The first eleven were financial records.

The twelfth was a draft agreement between Redwater and TGV Land Services.

It promised Todd something far greater than the half-million dollars already paid.

If Harold’s underground rights were successfully transferred and Cardinal completed acquisition, Todd would receive a success fee.

Three percent of the transaction.

I did the arithmetic.

At thirty-eight million dollars, Todd’s fee would exceed one million.

But the agreement contained a minimum.

$2,000,000.

Melissa stared at the page.

“He was trying to sell Dad’s land so he could collect two million dollars.”

Evelyn kept reading.

Then she stopped.

“There’s an amendment.”

“What?”

The amendment increased Todd’s success fee if he obtained Harold’s signature before a specific date.

The date was six days after Harold’s final hospital treatment.

I felt something cold settle inside me.

Todd had not merely pressured a sick father.

Somebody had put a deadline and a bonus on it.

At the bottom of the amendment was a signature from Redwater.

Grant Heller.

And beside it, another approval line.

CARDINAL ACQUISITION AUTHORIZATION.

The signature was illegible.

But the typed name beneath it was not.

Lewis Carrick.

<a
