find.

That bothered me.

People involved in elaborate financial crimes were supposed to hide behind aliases, shell companies, false addresses, and locked office doors.

Victor Hale had a website.

His photograph appeared beneath the words Hale Retirement Strategies, smiling from a beige suit with the self-satisfied confidence of a man who had spent decades persuading people that his handshake was as safe as a vault.

Daniel found him before breakfast.

By noon, he knew more.

Victor had been a licensed financial adviser until five years earlier, when regulators suspended him for mishandling client funds.

Two years after that, his license was revoked.

One year after that, Thomas Brooks “died.”

The sequence made my skin crawl.

“Were Thomas and Victor business partners?” I asked.

“We don’t know yet.”

Daniel sat behind his desk with three monitors open, each filled with records.

Brian occupied the chair beside me.

That arrangement alone would have seemed impossible a week earlier.

We were not reconciled.

We were barely speaking outside the investigation.

But Daniel had decided information mattered more than comfort.

So Brian sat there looking as though he had slept three hours in three days.

“The photograph proves they knew each other,” Daniel continued. “That’s all.”

Brian stared at Holdings had been formed using an attorney in another county.

The registered mailing address belonged to a postal store.

But its bank records, newly subpoenaed after the fraud allegations, showed something much more interesting.

Patricia had transferred money into it.

Not once.

Repeatedly.

Five thousand.

Eight thousand.

Twelve thousand.

Small enough to avoid looking dramatic.

Large enough to matter.

Over two years, the transfers totaled more than ninety thousand death.”

The answer came the next day.

They had.

Not all of them.

But one private pension associated with Thomas’s former employer had continued making monthly payments into a joint account Patricia controlled.

The payments should have stopped upon his death.

Patricia never reported it.

Over three years, the total exceeded seventy thousand dollars.

Fraud on top of fraud.

But something still did not fit.

If Thomas was alive, why stage his death only to keep receiving pension money?

Why withdraw my savings?

Why involve Melissa?

Why hide at Lake Emerson?

The first real answer came from the cabin.

Police searched it after obtaining a warrant.

Thomas was not there.

But traces of a life were.

Men’s clothing.

Prescription bottles.

Letters.

A shaving kit.

Pipe
