been screwed beneath the shelf.

Newer screws than the surrounding hardware.

Agents documented everything before removing it.

Behind the plate was a plastic waterproof tube.

Inside:

A small brass key.

And a folded card.

Only four words.

Caroline kept her promise.

Brian stared.

“What promise?”

No one knew.

The key carried a manufacturer mark.

Agents traced it within hours.

It belonged to a secure archival-storage company operating private document vaults in three states.

Thomas had rented one under an alias.

The location was two hours away.

Access required both the physical key and a memorized passphrase.

Without the phrase, the company would open the vault only under warrant.

A warrant was obtained.

We did not need the phrase.

Victor did.

That meant he had been trying to get the key before investigators knew the vault existed.

Too late.

The facility resembled a warehouse more than a bank.

Rows of climate-controlled private units.

Thomas’s compartment was small.

Inside sat four metal file boxes.

A portable hard drive.

Several envelopes.

Three cassette tapes.

And a sealed banker’s box labeled C.M.

Caroline Mercer.

Daniel exhaled.

“She kept copies.”

The card from the boat made sense.

Caroline kept her promise.

Before her death, she had copied everything.

Thomas somehow obtained those copies later.

The banker’s box contained documents from Victor’s earliest scheme.

Account ledgers.

Transfer instructions.

Internal notes.

And a handwritten statement from Caroline herself.

She had written it the afternoon before the crash.

If anything happens to me, Thomas Brooks knows why.

Brian read the sentence.

His face tightened.

Not because it accused his father of killing her.

Because it meant she trusted him enough to name him.

And he failed that trust.

The hard drive contained later records.

Rachel’s investigations.

Thomas’s notes.

Photographs.

Bank files.

And a directory labeled CONTACTS.

Inside were names.

Thirty-seven of Alert.

My fear loosened.

Thomas had apparently approached her—or someone had.

She refused to participate.

Alert meant she might have warned someone.

That explained why she remembered.

Maybe she had already suspected irregular activity before my withdrawals.

Another name appeared.

Martin Vale.

The funeral-home owner who processed Thomas’s fake death certificate.

Code: P.

Paid.

No surprise.

Then:

Edwin Marr.

Code: Patricia’s sister’s daughter.

Melissa’s father had apparently worked at the county records office years earlier.

The file suggested he had helped create documents under pressure from Edwin.

That explained how Melissa entered the orbit.

Family networks.

Professional access.

Secrets inherited like property.

Then we found Patricia.

Not under P.

Not F.

Not C.

Her file contained one word.

Unaware.

Brian stared.

“Dad thought Mom didn’t changed.

Patricia — informed selectively.

Thomas had controlled what she knew.

Even his partner in faking his death did not know the full operation.

Then Daniel opened Caroline’s original records.

One name appeared repeatedly beside early transfers.

Thomas Brooks.

More than we had seen before.

Much more.

Thirty-eight thousand dollars had not been his total benefit.

That was only direct payments we traced.

Caroline’s files showed Thomas received commissions from
